UNAIR NEWS – Four students of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) ������ of PSDKU (Pusat Studi diluar Kampus utama/ Education Centre outside Main Campus)  Banyuwangi,  discovered about “pelet kroto” (PELO) as the fish feed which have been tested and showed that  it effective to quicken the growth and gain the survival rate of Clarias gariepinus.

Clarias gariepinus have a length 5-10 cm and weight 1-2 gram. In five samples during 30 days, both of length and weight increased. However, the maximum increase (doubled) in the fifth behavior (pure kroto without commercial pelet), the length increased 5.5 Cm and weight increased almost 4 grams.

They wrote their research on research proposal of student creativity program exacta research (PKM-PE). They are Indra Wicaksono (the coordinator of team), and the member Santika Dwi Christanti, Rina Suliestyana, and Ayu Nur Imaniy, and they are under guidance of the advisor,  Mohammad Faizal Ulkhaq, S.Pi., M.Si.

Indra Wicaksono said this research used Completely Randomized Design (RAL) with five treatment and four repeat which consisted of Treatment A (0% pellet, without kroto commercial), treatment B (with PELO, combination 25% kroto and 75% commercial pellet), treatment C (50% pellet and 50%kroto), treatment D (75% pellet and 25%kroto) and treatment E (100% PELO without commercial pellet).

Clarias gariepinus which was tested has length 5-10 Cm and weight 1-2 gram; there were 20 fishes for each repeat. The parameter of observation consisted of specific growth and survival rate during observation day (30 days). The research showed that this kroto has the high nutrient consists of dried material, ash, rude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, Ca, BETN, ME (Kcal/kg)

According to him, the background of this research regarded to nutrition. Nutrition is important thing to support life survival. “Without nutrition the growth wpuld be hampered and lead to death. One of high nutrient food is kroto, consists protein up to 47%,” Indra said

Meanwhile, Kroto utilization was only for as bird food and decoy for fishing. It also used for chicken farmer to quicken the growth. In Thailand and Philippine, Kroto use is not only for bird or fish food, but also for human food due to high nutrient content and soft texture like cream.

Aquaculture is the most common activity in Indonesia, due to high prospect. However, the expensive price became the obstacle. So, it needs to find out the alternative feed which is cheap, reachable and has high nutrient.

“Kroto from ant egg has the high protein, it’s good for fish feed, specially, carnivore fish because kroto protein is from animal protein,” Indra said

The advantage of PELO (pelet kroto) is cheap and reachable. Secondly, this product been tested as the alternative fish food to quicken the growth, and, thirdly it has good scent.
