UNAIR NEWS – His interest in music started when he was at school. His great interest in music made him determined to be a singer. He was known as a member of Yovie and Nuno. Since 2012 he has had a solo career.

He is Dudi Oris. Before he went to D-3 Marketing Management, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNAIR in 1996, he went to a private university in Surabaya. But as the academic and students’ activities in that university did not support his interest and talent, he moved to UNAIR.

Dudi shared his story before he performed in “Gala Dinner and Awards: Emerald Night of FEB UNAIR”, Saturday, August 27 in Dyandra Convention Center. He was guest star for the final celebration of FEB 55^th anniversary.

During college, he admitted that he had great comrades. Even though he was separated from his campus friend, he still often contacted them via telephone and sometimes hang out again.

“I have strong bonds with my friends, Until now, we often communicate and hang out. I was in D3 MP (Marketing Management). If I am asked (whether I have graduated or not) I always answered that I was from UNAIR. My friends often made jokes that MP was actually not marketing management but parking management as we often hung out at the parking lot,” he recalled.

At college he joined a jazz band. He went from one stage to another in Surabaya and Malang. It  consisted of students from various faculties in UNAIR.

One of the most exciting thing which caused him to move to UNAIR was the music event held routinely, musik lorong. Were there many music events held at that time?

“Routine!” Dudi answered. “In Economics we have a legendary event called Musik Lorong.  I don’t know if it is still held now? Many have started from there. Ari Lasso was there, Ahmad Dhani was there, Fadly ‘Padi’ was also from Musik Lorong,” added Dudi.

The music event called “Musik Lorong” was an off air music event which facilitate music interest and talents, especially FEB students. Dudi admitted that it was quite popular at that time.

“It was not a festival, but it was off air event. It was very popular as there were many students of other campus wanted to perform there. So, it was held by Economics students along the corridor,” said the SMAN 5 Surabaya graduate.

Music Career

He admitted that he did not finish his study as he had to choose between music or education. At that time, he wanted to stop his study for a moment but because he had fallen for music, Dudi finally decided to leave university.

In 2001, Dudi joined in a group called Yovie and Nuno. With the band, he has released four albums, “Semua Bintang”, “Kemenangan Cinta”, “The Special One”, and “Winning Eleven”. In 2012, he decided to leave the band and had a solo career.

“I first joined a band through an audition, I had only guts. Surabaya has bonek right? So, I used to have an established band. After a few years we disbanded. If I had started again in the same place, it wouldn’t feel right. So I moved to Jakarta, tried the audition for Yovie and Nuno, and alhamdulillah I was trusted by Yovie to be a frontman,” said the man with a child.

After he left the band, he had a solo career and started business with his friends. He had thought about it well. “I have planned all from the start. From hobby to a profession, now it is shifted a bit. More relaxed, more time to choose days for work. For now, the album is waiting for release date. There are six songs already for the mini album,” said Dudi.

Regarding the challenges in music business. Dudi said, “There are many new talented artists. But everything comes back to what it needs to last long, honesty, focus and don’t ever feel great at things. It has correlation with respects for others’ works and opinions,” said Dudi ending his interview. (*)
