Grief is not only felt by the family, but also the doctor鈥檚 colleagues, especially those from the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, FK UNAIR-RSUD Dr.聽Soetomo.
Prof. Indropo was close to all of his students. It was so memorable in the mind of Dr.聽Linda Astari, SpKK.
“Even though he was in a wheelchair, it did not stop him to continue his activities.聽He remained active in clinics, examining, and guiding students, ” she recalled.
Prof. Indropo’s dedication to develop medical education, especially in the field of Dermatology and Venereology is undoubted.聽In 2018 Regional Dermatology Conference event some time ago, Prof. Indropo was awarded by Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia as an Individual who played a major role in overcoming Multibacillary or leprosy type M. leprae in Indonesia.
“I think this is the highest award for his dedication after decades of聽concern for聽developing research on leprosy in Indonesia,” she said.
More than 35 years, Prof. Indropo had conducted researches related to leprosy which is still a problem in Indonesia.聽Together with his team, Prof. In did not hesitate to go to a number of leprosy endemic areas.
He was graduated from Dermatology and Venereology specialist program at FK UNAIR in 1979. The man born in Solo flew to countries such as India to study leprosy.聽In 1980, with his colleagues, Prof. Indropo pioneered and formed a partnership with a leprosy foundation from the Netherlands to treat leprosy patients in hospitals.
At that time, thousands of lepers received free treatment and treatment, so many leprosy patients from disadvantaged community could eventually be treated.
In addition to struggling for treatment for lepers, the man born in April 1949 also tried hard to change the stigma of society.聽Leprosy sufferers are often faced with psychosocial disorders due to being isolated by the surrounding community.
In 2011,聽鲍狈础滨搁听狈贰奥厂聽interviewed Prof. Indropo in the laboratory of Institute of Tropical Diseases (ITD) UNAIR.聽On that occasion, Prof. In emphasized that the actual process of leprosy transmission did not immediately occur with just one contact with the patient.聽It takes a long time for someone to be infected.
The sources of transmission include other individuals who contracted Multibacillary type (MB) M. leprae bacilli and have not been treated.聽According to him if the individual makes long contact with the sufferer, it can be transmitted through the air and sprinkles of saliva but with continuous exposure.
Not only聽focusing on leprosy, Prof. Indropo is also known to be very concerned about the sustainability of FK UNAIR Medical Education Museum.聽With the initiative of Prof. dr.聽Sentot Moestadjab Soeatmadji at that time, Prof. Indropo, wholeheartedly managed the museum keeping the remains of past medical instruments.
In fact, Prof. Indropo with eight other FK UNAIR Alumni also inaugurated FK UNAIR Alumni Inscription on May 25, 2002.
On the walls of the entrance and exit corridors FK UNAIR, the names of alumni were carved onto a piece of marble.聽These names are alumni who have completed medical education at FK UNAIR.聽Automatically this inscription also includes NIAS graduates (since 1923), Djakarta Ika Dai Gaku graduates, to FK UNAIR graduates.
The majority of relics displayed at FK UNAIR Medical Education Museum are donations from Prof. Indropo such as some black and white photos taken from an orientation activity, as well as photos of him with classmates.
The existence of FK UNAIR Museum has received a lot of support from a number of alumni.聽A lot of alumni volunteered to donate collections of books, photographs, medical instruments of the past, including graduation attire.聽There is also the Dutch East Indies Governor General’s Decree Number 365 concerning the establishment of NIAS in 1913.
The Medical Education Museum received thousands of photos from alumni, medical devices, documents, books, to graduation facilities such as graduation attire and diploma.聽In the museum there are also ancient Dutch colonial era microscopes, syringes from time to time, operating tools, the first Indonesian X-ray, and an award certificate received by the Javanese doctor dr. Soetomo who is also the founder of Boedi Oetomo.
