UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Faculty of Medicine (FK) of 东京热 welcomed 31 students of the Hybrid Medical Specialist Education Program (PPDS) of the Indonesian National Military on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. The Dean, Prof. Dr, Budi Santoso dr SpOG Subs FER welcomed them in a ceremony in FK Hall. The Head of the National Health Center, Maj. Gen. TNI Dr. Budiman SpBP-RE also attended the event virtually.
The Dean hoped that the Hybrid PPDS program could be UNAIR鈥檚 contribution in responding to the doctor shortage in Indonesia, particularly the specialist and its misdistribution.
鈥淔or the past two months, the Health Minister and Education Minister keep pushing us to improve the ratio of doctors and specialists,鈥 Prof. Budi said.
According to WHO, the ratio of doctors and residents is 1:1000 population. If the population in Indonesia is 270 million residents, ideally the current number of doctors is 270 thousand doctors. However, the number of doctors in Indonesia barely reaches 140 thousand. In conclusion, Indonesia needs 130 thousand more doctors.
While the ideal ratio of specialists refers to each of the specialties, while some require 30-40: 100 thousand residents, others also name a 50: 100 thousand population.
鈥淔or the Ob-Gyn specialists, for instance. We targeted the ratio of 5:100 thousand populations. Today, we have 4,900 Ob-Gyn specialists. Compared to the population, it鈥檚 still far away,鈥 he said.
There are two strategies for accelerating specialist doctors in Indonesia. First, by adding a specialist study program, which can be done by A-accredited health faculty, excels, or by doubling the number of PPDS students.
鈥淒epending on the general hospitals for the specialist study is not enough. Therefore, military-owned hospitals should have adequate facilities and infrastructure to aggrandize the educational program,鈥 said the Head of the Association of Indonesian Medical Education Institutions (AIPKI).
Distributed to remote areas
The Head of the National Health Center, Maj. Gen. TNI Dr. Budiman SpBP-RE added that the specialist graduates would be distributed to the needed regions.
The 31 PPDS doctors of the Indonesia National Military hybrid program were the selected ones among the 43 candidates. They were registered in nine study programs at FK UNAIR, which were ready to accept PPDS of the Indonesia National Military hybrid program earlier.
The nine specialties include cardiac, neurosurgery, radiology, anesthesiology, intensive therapy, reconstructive plastic surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, orthopedics, traumatology, and pediatrics.
In the future, the doctors will undergo residency programs at the military-owned hospital under the senior doctors鈥 and UNAIR FK鈥檚 experts鈥 guidance. Beforehand, they will be educated at FK UNAIR.
