UNAIR NEWS – The skincare industry is growing. Various skincare products are offered, ranging from skincare products claimed to whiten, brighten to products that cure acne. However, in choosing skincare, you should check its content.

One of the ingredients to watch out for in skincare is steroids. Basically, steroids are drugs used to treat inflammation in the body. Dr. Medhi Denisa Alinda, dr., Sp.KK. FINDSV, says that skincare manufacturers use steroids because they make changes to the skin quickly. “One of the effects of using steroids in skincare is hypopigmentation. It is what is often misused in skincare products as a whitener,” she said.

“Whereas topical steroids are usually used for atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, psoriasis vulgaris, and others,” she added.

The use of steroids in skincare certainly has side effects on facial skin. “The danger is that it can cause side effects such as telangiectasia or visible blood vessels, reddish face, more sensitive skin, striae or the appearance of stretch marks on the face,” she explained.

In addition to steroids, there are other skincare ingredients that people should be aware of, such as mercury and hydroquinone. “Mercury is prohibited from being used for skincare. Meanwhile, the use of hydroquinone must be with the recommendations of a dermatologist,” she said.

The dermatology and venerology specialist at ������ Hospital (UNAIR) and a lecturer at FK UNAIR advised the public to be careful in choosing skincare, especially for products that provide quick results. “People must first check the ingredients in skincare. If it offers fast white skin in an instant, they should be wary of the hypopigmented effect of steroids and that ultimately causes facial skin to turn red easily,” explained Medhi.

Suppose in the use of skincare there are side effects as previously mentioned. In that case, the public is advised to immediately stop using skincare and consult a dermatologist to restore facial skin to normal.
