UNAIR NEWS – Toothpaste, butter, and brown sugar are often used by people who get burned.聽When in fact, medically, the treatment with those things is not recommended.聽They may cause further skin irritation and make the injury more severe.
“They were meant to moisture but, on the other hand, we do not know what substances or ingredients they contain.聽It is better to take the recommended medical action, “said the student as well as in charge of training entitled ‘Health Education K3, Demonstration, Evacuation and Management on Fire Victims’ in Medokan Semampir, Thursday, January 4.
In the training that was held by the students of Nursing Professional program (P3N) , explained that most of the victims in the hospital who came with burns suffered a considerable degree of injury.聽The treatment given after the injury can be the cause.
With the appropriate procedure, after the burn, the wound area must be cooled by washing it through the cleaned, drained water.聽Next, make sure the wound area remains moist, by cover it with damp cloth.
“Clean it with clean water.聽If not, water will cause infection causing more severe injuries or further complications, “said Hidayat.聽“So, the first step, make sure the wound was closed and stay damp,” he added.
Hidayat explained, burns occur because of the skin, mucous (deep skin layer), and deeper tissues experienced heat trauma due to heat-producing materials.聽At the same time, people with burns will experience evaporation (evaporation) body fluids.
“Excessive evaporation of body fluids is what is feared,” he said.
Because, excessive evaporation of body fluids can lead to hypovolemic shock, the condition of circulatory failure due to low blood volume so the heart cannot pump it to all parts of the body.聽Symptoms are anxiety, paleness, cold sweat, small and rapid pulse, decreased blood pressure, and reduced urine production.
“Therefore, people are expected to be more careful in handling the victims of fire.聽Basic knowledge or first aid is important so that the potential for greater injury can be avoided, “he explained.聽“After the first aid or proper treatment, let the medical personnel do further treatment,” he added.聽(*)
