UNAIR NEWS – The increasing prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) makes the burden on the state for maintenance of the disease related to “lifestyle” is getting bigger. Low public awareness on the importance of early blood sugar check will also make new diabetes detected only when complications have occurred.

To facilitate and awaken the awareness of the community, Faculty of Medicine (FK) students of ¶«¾©ÈÈ, through Entrepreneurship  Creativity Program  (PKMK) was a reason for proposing the concept of  “Drive Thru Blood Sugar Check “.

Anggi Dewi, Team Leader of this PKMK FK UNAIR explained that her team was inspired by the concept of drive thru practiced by fast food restaurants.

“Surely people are more interested to check blood sugar if you do not need long queues, the cost is cheap, available during driving. No need to get off vehicles. So there will be more people aware to check blood sugar as early as possible, and more people will be avoided from diabetes. Because diabetes, can only be prevented as there is no cure for it, “said Anggi Dewi told the press.

” Drive Thru Blood Sugar Check“ is very suitable for citizens of Surabaya and other big cities high intensity of activity. They can check blood sugar levels for example while exercising, enjoying weekend with the family, even while driving a motorcycle or car, so the stigma of society on complicated blood sugar check in the laboratory turned into fun, fast (only 10 seconds) and affordable.

“With only  Rp 10,000 they can check blood sugar levels as well as check blood pressure for free and consult directly with health workers about healthy lifestyles,” added Anggi.

The business run by this PKMK Team, every Saturday and Sunday, at the location of jogging track Al-Akbar National Mosque Surabaya, is quite crowded with visitors. Open from April 1, 2017 to June 4, 2017, there were 1298 people checking their blood sugar.

From those people,  42.9% of them checked their blood sugar for the first time and 105 people just realized that their high blood sugar levels are above normal. The data shows that this team has managed to make the public aware on the importance to check blood sugar levels early on.

“We always maintain good relations with the customers. Friendly service, low cost, and consultations we provide are plus points, so many of them return to check in our place, even inviting neighbors or relatives. There is even a call to check at home, because his parents suffered a stroke. Alhamdulillah our program is very useful, “said Anggi.

As a Ìý´Ç²Ô±ðÌýÌý±ô±ð²¹»å¾±²Ô²µÌý in Indonesia, the five of them, Anggi Dewi, Nor Ain, Reskia, Ritje Paembonan, and Rani Kusumawardani, are not shy to run their activity on the pavement with other merchants.

Not shy? “There’s no need to be shy, this is a good start to trigger the entrepreneurial spirit from an early age. We are very grateful to the Directorate General of Higher Education for giving us the opportunity to learn entrepreneurship, “said Anggi.

“In addition to being Champion at PIMNAS, our future goal is to have many branches of ‘ blood sugar check Drive Thru ‘  so that more and more people will be avoided from diabetes.
