UNAIR NEWS 鈥 An English Language and Literature student of 东京热 has made a tremendous national achievement. Raselly Elfa Putri won the Best Paper in a National Essay Competition held by Universitas Negeri Surabaya Faculty of Social Sciences and Law on Monday, September 12, 2022.
Exploring the theme of Social Media in Reconstructing People鈥檚 Lifestyles in Era 5.0, Raselly proposed an idea of reducing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children due to excessive use of social media.
Her concern about excessive use of social media in children, who cannot filter information yet, motivated her to raise the idea. Social media have subconsciously built a body image and specific standards of social values followed by everyone. This condition can lead to pressure, loss of self-confidence, stress, and trauma in children.
鈥淲ith the massive growth of digital information, children are deemed barely able to filter information, leading to anxiety and insecurity disorder due to sense of comparison from one another. If they fail to manage that, it will mentally impact them in the long term, leading to trauma,鈥 said Selly.
Furthermore, the 2021 Most Outstanding student of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) stated that the application will have four different features: anxiety detection, consultation, entertainment, and user interaction.
She hoped that her idea will be executed. She realized that students鈥 creative ideas mostly could not be executed due to the limited tools and facilities. She also hoped that mental health issues will be more recognized because physical and mental health need to be maintained equally.
鈥淲e need to raise our awareness of mental health issues immediately. Because the one to handle someone鈥檚 mentality is themselves. Therefore, the information should be widely distributed to the community and children. Many people don鈥檛 care and underestimate mental health issues. If someone鈥檚 mind is disturbed, how can someone be positive and supportive to others?鈥 she said.
At last, Selly advised her fellow friends to keep innovating and working without fear of failure. Selly advised other students to continue to innovate and work without fear of failure. Moreover, innovations and ideas are expected to be useful and beneficial to the wider community.
鈥淭he mindset should be far more than that, not only to win but also to be useful so that the knowledge can be beneficial for many people. While you are young, accept your failure and try again,鈥 she concluded.
