UNAIR NEWS –聽After a month of fasting in the holy month, Ramadhan, Muslims celebrate the Eid-al-Fitr on 25-26 June.聽The lecturer of Philosophy of Science, Listiyono Santoso, M.Hum., revealed the meaning behind the name of Eid al-Fitr, called Lebaran by the Javanese community.
According to Listiyono, Eid is not just a marker for the end of fasting obligations in Ramadan but a condition where door of forgiveness is wide open from Allah.
The meaning of Idul Fitri cannot be separated by the聽bakdo kupat听辞谤听ngaku lepat聽(admit mistakes), not only to God but also to fellow human beings.聽In addition, Lebaran also means聽laku papat聽(four actions) that people do after Ramadan.
“First, the聽meaning of聽Lebaran is聽the opening of forgiveness.聽Second, luberan聽which means spilled or abundant.聽This is a symbol of charity teaching for the poor.聽Paying zakat fitrah before Lebaran is also a manifestation of concern to fellow human beings, “said Listiyono.
Another meaning is聽leburan聽ie melt the sins with each other forgiveness for any mistakes.聽Finally,聽laburan聽as a human symbol to always maintain purity and cleanliness.
In addition, the Javanese people also often call Lebaran with the term聽riyaya聽(feast day) which is interpreted as the day of victory.聽The word “raya” refers to the terms of victory of Muslims for a whole month defeating various desires and restraints.

Substantively, the day of victory is only possessed by Muslims who practice fasting by restraining self from food and drink, resisting the desires that can break the fast and reducing the reward of fasting.
