UNAIR NEWS聽鈥 Faculty of Law 聽东京热 (UNAIR) collaborated with Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to hold a national symposium聽 and 聽Focused Group Discussion聽(FGD) with a theme 鈥淓ncouraging Effective Implementation of United Nation Guiding Principles聽(UNGP)聽on Business and Human Rights鈥. The event was to improve the roles and capacity of the state in developing business which respects human rights.
It was held on April 26-27 and attended by Dr. (HC) Triyono Wibowo, SH, Indonesian Ambassador for UN, WTO and other international organizations in Geneva. FH UNAIR alumnus was a keynote speaker in a session of the symposium.
听鈥This symposium is a collaboration of Indonesian delegation for UN, WTO and other international organization in Geneva, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and FH UNAIR,鈥 said the ambassador.
Among the major topics of business and human rights, there were sub-topics such as human rights audit, great scale land acquisition, supplay chain, migrated workers, forced labor, minor labor, also human trafficking, restoration access through judicial and non-judicial mechanisms, human rights protectors鈥 protection, women rights in business and environmental and community protection.
Besides being divided into sub-topics, it was also divide into three discussion sessions. At the end of the discussion, Imam Prihandono, Ph. D., as the head of International Law Department FH UNAIR stated that on human rights issues, there are no agreed solution mechanisms on human right violation related to corporations. There are many regulations talking about those two things but they are not specific enough. Next, UNGP is expected later to be the instrument and national plan to be implemented in Indonesia. According to him, the results of the symposium will be recommendations for policies regulating business and human rights through national acts and human right audits.
鈥淲e will push and oblige human right audit for corporations, so the violations on human rights can be suppressed,鈥 he said. (*)
