On the 19th of July 2026, we started our internship at Kota Damansara Veterinary Centre in Malaysia. We applied for this internship with the aim of gaining experience in handling animal patients in a real-life clinical setting and to improve our knowledge of veterinary science in the field in hopes of becoming successful veterinarians. We also wanted to learn more about the practical aspects of animal husbandry including animal handling and restraint, communicating with patient owners and conducting clinical procedures.
During our two-week internship, we learned how to care for hospitalised patients, namely by referring to their medical charts, taking their weight and recording ABU (appetite, bowel, urine). After updating the medical charts, we were taught how to prepare meals and sanitise their cages. We would then assist in wound dressing, blood drawing and administering certain medication under the supervision of a veterinary nurse. We were also given the opportunity to observe a handful of surgical operations including forelimb amputation, sterilisation (spay), tumour removal and tooth extraction. Another highlight was when we could assist during X-ray and ultrasound scans.
One of the most important aspects of our internship was being able to observe patient consultations. We were able to see the differences in how different vets communicated with their clients and the importance of being able to understand multiple languages in a multicultural country like Malaysia. By observing consultations, we learned that it is crucial to speak in a friendly, open manner and encourage owners to explain their pet鈥檚 condition in detail. We also gained an understanding of how important communication is between staff members. We developed our communication and teamwork skills, as they play a key role in ensuring the correct flow of information and smooth cooperation between veterinarians and nurses.
This internship has been a great experience in allowing us to connect what we have learned in theory and applying it in a real clinical setting. It has given us a better understanding of how our theoretical knowledge is used in everyday practice. We observed how basic physiological checks were used to find and determine any physical injuries. Every patient has their own different needs and characteristics, as such, veterinarians have to be observant, patient, and adaptable. We also learned that providing good veterinary care involves working closely with both the patient and its owner.
All in all, our internship at Kota Damansara Veterinary Centre has been a valuable experience.聽 We were able to gain practical knowledge and improve our communication and teamwork abilities. We are very grateful to all the veterinarians and staff at the clinic for their patience and for guiding us throughout our internship. We will use the valuable knowledge and skills that we learned as we continue our studies.
