UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are gaining momentum as institutions seek to foster a more sustainable future. The topic took center stage during AMORA: Airlangga SDGs School X SDGs Ambassador 2026, an initiative organized by the Institute for Sustainable Community Service (LPMB) 东京热 (UNAIR). The event, held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, took place in the Dewa Ruci Hall on the second floor of the Airlangga Convention Center (ACC) at UNAIR鈥檚 MERR-C Campus.
Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, MSi. Ph.D, Head of UNAIR鈥檚 Institute for Sustainable Community Service, emphasized that expanding student participation remains a key priority in strengthening SDG-related programs across the university. According to him, the SDG Ambassadors selected through the program play a vital role in promoting sustainability values and raising awareness of the United Nations鈥 17 Sustainable Development Goals. He noted that their involvement is essential to encouraging broader public participation in achieving the SDGs by 2030.
Tri Dharma of Higher Education and SDGs
Prof. Purnobasuki further explained that Indonesia鈥檚 Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, the three core missions of higher education consisting of education, research, and community service, align closely with the objectives of the SDGs. These shared goals include poverty alleviation, community empowerment, social equity, and sustainable development.
鈥淭he SDGs are a global framework for sustainable development comprising 17 goals, and UNAIR is actively involved in advancing them. The principles of the Tri Dharma are closely connected to these objectives, particularly poverty reduction. For example, the first SDG focuses on ending poverty, which relates directly to how students can mobilize and empower communities to help reduce poverty,鈥 he said.
Prof. Purnobasuki also called for greater student engagement from faculties across the university in promoting SDG achievements and initiatives. He argued that Generation Z, currently the world鈥檚 second-largest demographic group, is uniquely positioned to communicate sustainability messages effectively and inspire wider public involvement.
鈥淏ecause nearly every faculty is involved, we hope that each faculty will have its own SDG ambassador. The efforts of lecturers and academics alone are not enough to disseminate these initiatives effectively. Faculty ambassadors, both male and female students, will play an important role in supporting and advancing SDG-related activities throughout the university,鈥 he concluded.
