UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Learning with Community Programme (BBK) 8 of 东京热 (UNAIR) organised an educational session titled 鈥淪mart Kids, Smart Phone: Cerdas Menggunakan, Bijak Memanfaatkan鈥 for Year 1 to Year 6 pupils at SDN 4 Jetis, Situbondo Regency, on Monday (July 20, 2026). Attended by 103 pupils, the programme aimed to equip young learners with the awareness to use digital devices responsibly and wisely from an early age.
The programme began with the screening of an educational video on responsible smartphone use, followed by an interactive discussion session to explore the pupils’ understanding of the messages presented in the video. Amel, a member of the UNAIR BBK 8 team, explained that the interactive approach was chosen to make the material easier for primary school pupils to understand. 鈥淲e wanted the children not only to listen, but also to think critically and discuss what they should and should not do when using smartphones,鈥 she said.
Teaching the benefits and risks of smartphone use
Through the programme, the UNAIR BBK 8 students introduced the pupils to the various benefits of smartphones, including using them for learning, staying in touch with family, searching for information, and watching educational videos. The pupils were also encouraged to understand the risks of excessive smartphone use, such as eye strain, sleep difficulties, body aches, and spending less time playing with friends.
The session also emphasised the importance of using smartphones at appropriate times, such as after studying, helping parents, completing homework, or finishing religious activities. In addition, the pupils learned the importance of protecting personal information, including social media passwords, phone numbers, home addresses, and personal photos, as well as practising respectful behaviour when interacting online.
The UNAIR BBK 8 team also equipped the pupils with practical steps to respond to uncomfortable situations while using smartphones, such as receiving messages from strangers or being asked to share personal information. The pupils were taught to close the application, avoid replying to the message, and immediately report the incident to their parents or teachers.
Fostering commitment and supporting the SDGs
As a demonstration of their commitment, all pupils recited a pledge to use smartphones responsibly while continuing to study diligently, play with friends, and help their parents. The programme concluded with a group photo session using a special 鈥淪mart Kids, Smart Phone鈥 frame designed by the UNAIR BBK 8 team.
The school welcomed the programme and fully supported its implementation by providing classroom facilities and coordinating the schedule for all Year 1 to Year 6 pupils.
The programme also supported the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting digital literacy from an early age, and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by strengthening children’s awareness of personal safety when interacting in digital spaces.
