UNAIR NEWS 鈥 A research team presented a study entitled 鈥淒ownstreaming Bromo鈥檚 Green Economy: Transforming Spring Water Ecosystems and Carbon into an Endowment Fund for Village Scholarships鈥 during the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of the Progress Report for the Jatim Melaju Collaborative Research (Riskolab) 2026 at Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, on Wednesday (July 29, 2026). The research, developed by the Human, Culture, and Physicality Laboratory (Lab. MaBuRag) of the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), 东京热 (UNAIR), is one of 53 research projects selected to receive the Riskolab Jatim Melaju 2026 research grant.
The research is led by Prof Dr H Muhammad Adib Drs MA, who serves as the principal investigator and Coordinator of Lab. MaBuRag UNAIR. He collaborates with Prof Dr H Moh Asror Yusuf MAg from UIN Syekh Wasil Kediri and Dr Ahmad Sodiq from UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah (UIN SATU) Tulungagung, together with fellow researchers and students.
Receiving feedback
A total of 182 researchers from 16 public universities across East Java participated in the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Riskolab Jatim Melaju 2026 Progress Report. Through this forum, researchers presented the progress of their studies while receiving feedback to strengthen collaboration, research downstreaming, and the societal impact of their work.

During the evaluation session following the presentation, reviewers Dr. Muryono from the Department of Biology at ITS and Dr Andik from UIN Sunan Ampel (UINSA) Surabaya provided several recommendations to improve the study. According to them, the research should place greater emphasis on quantifying ecosystem benefits and their social impact on local communities to enhance its economic value.
鈥淭he added value of this research will be significantly strengthened if the benefits of spring water ecosystems and carbon can be measured more comprehensively. It is not only about identifying the 62 spring water sources in the village, but also measuring water discharge, land area, and their impacts on the local community. Such data could contribute to the development of high-quality carbon credits with stronger economic value,鈥 said Dr Muryono.
鈥淲hat can be monetized is not only the carbon itself but also the social benefits it generates. We need to understand how the water supports livelihoods, what sectors it benefits, and how it affects the local community. All of these aspects should be carefully measured and quantified,鈥 he added.
Both reviewers also highlighted the importance of validating the research methodology, accurately measuring spring water discharge, determining the size of the conservation area, and presenting highly visible and reliable data to support the monetization of ecosystem services.
鈥淭he three mandatory research outputs must also be completed as soon as possible. The monetization methodology should be further strengthened, while opportunities in the voluntary carbon market and international collaboration networks should be explored. This will ensure that the research produces not only publications but also tangible benefits for society,鈥 concluded Dr Andik.
This publication supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
