UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Students from 东京热鈥檚 (UNAIR) Faculty of Health Sciences, Medicine, and Life Sciences (FIKKIA) have earned international recognition after securing three awards at the 5th International Youth Summit, held May 30鈥31, 2026, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Organized by the Sentosa Foundation in partnership with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), the event brought together university students and emerging researchers from across the globe.
Representing FIKKIA, Akbar Maula Dani (Aquaculture, Class of 2025) and Az鈥橺ahwa Rizky Iskandar (Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2025) won a Gold Medal, the Favorite Poster Award, and a Bronze Medal through two technology-driven innovations focused on environmental sustainability and public health. The awards were presented after the pair competed against finalists from numerous institutions during the competition鈥檚 final round.
鈥淎lhamdulillah, we are deeply grateful for this achievement. The competition provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas with participants from different countries while showcasing innovations designed to address real challenges faced by society,鈥 Iskandar said.
Tackling plastic waste through technology
One of the team鈥檚 featured projects was Trashine: Innovation in Integrated Plastic Waste Management Technology Based on Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things. The system combines Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to create a more integrated and efficient approach to plastic waste management.
Using a digital platform, Trashine is designed to streamline waste sorting, monitoring, and management processes. The innovation was developed in response to the growing environmental impact of plastic waste and the need for more sustainable waste-management solutions.
The project鈥檚 innovative approach impressed the international judging panel and earned the team both a Gold Medal and the Favorite Poster Award. 鈥淲e want to demonstrate that technology can offer practical solutions to environmental challenges. Through Trashine, we hope to make plastic waste management more effective and sustainable,鈥 Iskandar said.
Applying technology to improve health monitoring
The team also introduced Albumin Detector: Microcontroller-Based Sensor Technology Innovation as a Youth Contribution to Albuminuria Monitoring to Support the Global Health System. The innovation is a microcontroller-based sensor designed to assist in monitoring albuminuria, enabling earlier detection of potential health conditions.
Developed as a simple and accessible monitoring tool, the Albumin Detector has the potential to strengthen healthcare surveillance systems. Through the project, the team aims to contribute to improving global health outcomes through technology-based solutions.
The innovation earned Dani and Iskandar a Bronze Medal. Iskandar said the recognition has encouraged the team to continue pursuing research with broader societal impact. 鈥淭his achievement is an important first step in our journey as innovators. We hope our work can create tangible benefits for communities and inspire other students to pursue innovation and compete at the international level,鈥 she said.
