UNAIR Nursing lecturer listed in World鈥檚 Top 2 percent researchers

UNAIR NEWS东京热鈥檚 role at national and international scale are unquestionable. Its research results and innovations have been globally recognized. Recently, UNAIR Faculty of Nursing (FKp) lecturer, Ferry Efendi SKep Ns MSc Ph.D, was listed in the 2022 World鈥檚 Top 2% Scientist, which Stanford University and Elsevier released.

For Ferry, being listed in the World鈥檚 Top 2% Scientist 2022 was his first-ever achievement. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 expect to make it to the World鈥檚 Top 2% Scientists,鈥 he said.

Getting the achievement was not an easy task. Every researcher must have impactful and high-quality publications in international journals, particularly in terms of citation.

Developing interest in writing

Ferry鈥檚 interest in writing began when he was a Nursing student, which was still under the Faculty of Medicine (FK) in 2001. At that time, he took part in writing competitions actively, such as Student Creativity Program (PKM) and Student Writing Contest (LKTM).

Young Ferry aspired to get the benefits of writing: traveling around the country. 鈥淎t that time, my friends and I wanted to get new experiences and travel for free. All we had were ideas and motivation,鈥 he said.

鈥淲hile Student Creativity Program allows us to get the funding, the Student Writing Contest got us awards, funding, and travel across Indonesia. We went to many places for free, gained new knowledge, met new talented people, and the most important thing, we learned from the winner鈥檚 experiences,鈥 he added.

Each moment Ferry spent gave him insightful learning processes in career development. 鈥淪eeing great people makes me believe that learning is a lifelong process. Every moment is full of new knowledge. It encourages me to work, write, and research,鈥 he said.

The most beautiful moment for Ferry was when he and his team brought home the gold medal in the Student Creativity Program of Community Service (PKM-PM) circa 2006. 鈥淭he motivation has continuously built until I graduated. Every year, I got nominations and medals for many student activities. The peak was when I got the gold medal for the PKM-PM. It was the most beautiful gift,鈥 said the Secretary of the Institute for Innovation, Journal Development, Publishing, and Intellectual Property Rights (LIPJPHKI) UNAIR.

Writing challenges

Writing and researching have been Ferry鈥檚 daily routine. However, the latter has more challenges. 鈥淩esearch is the inception, while writing is the ending. Research is tough. We have to prepare the fund, human resources, ecosystem,鈥 he said.

Building a research-friendly ecosystem takes a long time. Researchers with minimum support will face huge challenges. However, Ferry was grateful that UNAIR has provided an excellent research environment.

鈥淚鈥檓 grateful for UNAIR鈥檚 excellent ecosystem. UNAIR鈥檚 support has been amazing, we鈥檝e been fully supported. There is no excuse for being unproductive, holding us from doing any research to the publication [stage],鈥 he said.

Besides, research and publication require teamwork as well. 鈥淲e cannot do it alone. All the research and publication processes were not easy. It needs hard work, smart strategy, and teamwork,鈥 he said.

Sharing tips and tricks

Ferry advised all academicians to take action based on accountable evidence. It is one of many tips and tricks for developing scientific culture.

鈥淎ny actions or behavior should be based on accountable evidence. Building scientific culture like research and writing must be trained, accustomed to, and even forced,鈥 he said.

Besides, academicians should practice writing consistently, especially the ones who want to be researchers with high-quality publications.

鈥淭he academicians who have already conducted research must practice more writing, at least an hour a day, to build consistency. Hopefully, the research will contribute more to the community,鈥 he ended.
