UNAIR NEWS – To commemorate the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, Nature Enthusiast Student Club (Wanala) ������ (UNAIR) organized a hiking expedition and community service project in Jampit Village, Ijen Subdistrict, Bondowoso Regency. The series of activities began with a hike in Mount Suket on August 25-26, 2026 and continued with disaster mitigation education at SDN 02 Djampit on August 27, 2026.

This hike served as a hands-on learning experience for Wanala UNAIR members to apply travel management, land navigation, map-reading technique, and terrain orientation on non-conventional trails. The event’s operational head, Fikri Maulana, explained that this hike was not merely about physical journey, but rather a test of outdoor skills in a real-world setting, as well as a tribute to the spirit of independence.

Establish disaster response team on the slopes of Mount Suket

After conquering the jungles of Mount Suket, the team headed toward SDN 02 Djampit to carry out a community service project. This event was titled “Suket Berdaya Adhirajasa”, involving 30 students from grade 4, 5, and 6.

Dino, a representative from Wanala UNAIR, emphasized that this community service project is a structured part of their internal program. “Laskar Siaga Bencana program is a planned program that forms a part of the 2026 Mountain Forest Division Intermediate Education agenda, with the sub-agenda of community service project. Meanwhile, the core focus of the agenda is hiking on non-conventional trails and applying the course material,” explained Dino.

The educational program was conducted interactively, covering materials ranging from natural disasters, environmental hygiene, to earthquake simulation. Dino noted that the student’s understanding of the materials was very satisfactory and that they were highly responsive.

“The students’ preparedness and understanding were quite tactical and easy to grasp. As an indicator, after the orientation, we gave them an exercise of true-or-false statements. As a result, the students can fully understand and answer it right. In addition, the earthquake simulation was carried out smoothly and effectively,” Dino said.

Remarks from school officials

When asked about the initial condition of the facilities for disaster preparedness at SDN 02 Djampit, Dino shared his observations from the school-site. “At school, there were many signs and markings in place, such as assembly points, evacuation routes, and several emergency hazard markers,” he added.

Dino also appreciated warm regards and full support from the school officials during the event.

“The school officials were very kind and welcoming. From the first survey until the day of the event, they facilitated and appreciated us a lot,” said Dino.

The educational session concluded with the handing over of school supplies, gifts for all students, souvenirs for school officials, as well as the chant “Laskar Siaga!” to which the students responded in sync with “Siap, Tanggap, Selamat!”
