UNAIR NEWS – (UNAIR), in partnership with Editage, hosted the Indonesia Research Summit 2.1 on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the Harris Hotel & Conventions Gubeng in Surabaya. Held under the theme Driving Global Research Impact Through Strategic Publication and Technological Innovation, the event brought together academics and research administrators from various institutions to promote more impactful and strategic scientific publication.

Superteam, Not Superman

The summit featured discussions on the evolving research publication landscape in Indonesia, including the integration of artificial intelligence in scholarly writing. Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., Chair of UNAIR’s Institute for Innovation, Journal Development, Publishing, and Intellectual Property Rights (LPJPHKI), shared insights into UNAIR’s publication strategy. He emphasized collaboration over individual effort, stating, “We don’t need a superman—because superman is dead. What UNAIR needs is a superteam.”

Prof. Purnobasuki went on to explain that LIPJPHKI’s role extends beyond managing journals and intellectual property. It also includes launching innovations such as digital academic business cards and the Scholar UNAIR platform, which helps document faculty members’ publication records and citation metrics. “We want our publications to go beyond just being published. They should be cited, used, and contribute meaningfully to scientific advancement,” he added.

AI and Ethics: Paperpal as research assistant

Another speaker, Prof. Firmansyah, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Chair of Research at LPPM Diponegoro University (UNDIP), shared his experience with Paperpal, an AI-powered platform introduced by Editage. Designed to support efficient scientific writing, Paperpal assists with narrative structuring, language refinement, and pre-submission polishing of manuscripts. “Paperpal isn’t a replacement for researchers,” he clarified. “It’s a smart assistant that helps with organizing ideas, reviewing structure, and refining the final draft before journal submission.”

Prof. Firmansyah also emphasized the importance of using AI ethically. “If other countries have started adopting this, why shouldn’t we? As long as we use it responsibly, this technology speeds up the process without sacrificing quality,” he said.

The summit concluded with a strong message: collaborative platforms like this are essential for idea exchange and for building a publication ecosystem that is both globally recognized and adaptable to modern challenges.
