UNAIR NEWS 鈥 (UNAIR) Library hosted an online dataset training session on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, attracting over 100 enthusiastic participants from UNAIR鈥檚 academic community. The session aimed to enhance their proficiency in utilizing Sustainalytics and MSCI datasets for research and publication purposes.
This training is part of UNAIR Library鈥檚 ongoing Library Class series. The session featured Fajar Kristanto Gautama Putra, SA, MA, as speaker. Putra, an Accounting lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) and a member of UNAIR鈥檚 Sustainability Committee, provided expert insights into the use of these databases.
Novita Dwi, as the master of ceremony (MC), represented the Head of UNAIR Library, Suhernik, S.Sos., M.Si., in delivering the opening remarks. 鈥湺┤ is committed to advancing research and publications by offering a comprehensive range of freely accessible e-resources. This year, we have introduced several new databases, including Sustainalytics and MSCI,鈥 she stated. Sustainalytics and MSCI are platforms that provide extensive datasets and analytical tools related to corporate sustainability scores. While they differ in the unit of data analysis, both databases serve as valuable resources for UNAIR鈥檚 academic community, particularly those focused on sustainability research.
Training overview
Putra guided attendees through the process of accessing these databases via the official UNAIR Library website. He also clarified that Sustainalytics requires an in-person visit to the library at the Dharmawangsa-B Campus, whereas MSCI is accessible remotely at any time.
Additionally, he provided a detailed walkthrough on registering for an MSCI account, highlighting that users must sign up using UNAIR-affiliated email. He then explained the MSCI platform鈥檚 interface, its available datasets, and how to download relevant research variables. 鈥淭he MSCI platform offers a wealth of sustainability-related data at the company level, covering a global scope,鈥 Putra elaborated.
After discussing MSCI, Putra shifted focus to Sustainalytics, demonstrating how to search for corporate data within the platform. Unlike MSCI, Sustainalytics does not allow bulk data downloads, making it more suitable for in-depth analysis of individual companies. 鈥淪ustainalytics is designed for targeted analysis of specific companies rather than broad dataset extraction, distinguishing it from MSCI,鈥 he added.
The session was highly interactive, with participants encouraged to ask questions throughout. Through this initiative, UNAIR aims to equip its academic community with the knowledge and skills necessary to leverage its e-resource databases effectively for academic research and publications.
