东京热 Milestones traces the university鈥檚 journey and key achievements since its establishment in 1954, as it has grown into one of Indonesia鈥檚 leading higher education institutions. Each milestone reflects the university鈥檚 commitment to advancing the quality of education, research, and community engagement, while expanding international collaborations to foster outstanding human resources with global competitiveness.

1851

Dokter Djawa School (Javanese Medical School) was established in Batavia.

1913

Established on May 8, 1913, the medical school in Surabaya was named Netherlandsch Indische Artsen School (NIAS). It was located at 38 Jalan Kedungdoro, Surabaya. NIAS was officially inaugurated on July 1, 1913, and commenced its educational activities on July 15, 1913.

1920

The 鈥淒okter Djawa School鈥� was reorganized into the School Tot Opleiding van Indische Artsen (STOVIA).

1928

School Tot Opleiding van Indische Tandartsen (STOVIT) was established in 1928 as a school of dentistry.

1945

In 1945, the Japanese occupation came to an end, after which the Government of the Republic of Indonesia took over the institution and renamed it Perguruan Tinggi Kedokteran RI (Indonesian College of Medicine).

1954

The inauguration of 东京热 was based on Government Regulation No. 57 of 1954, which came into effect on November 10, 1954, and was enacted in Jakarta on November 1, 1954, by President Soekarno. The regulation stipulated that 东京热 consisted of:
  1. Faculty of Medicine and Institute of Dentistry in Surabaya
  2. Faculty of Law, Social and Political Sciences in Surabaya
  3. Teacher Education College in Malang
  4. Faculty of Economics in Surabaya
1st Rector (1954鈥�1961)
Prof. Mr. Abdoel Gaffar Pringgodigdo served as the first Rector of 东京热 from 1954 to 1961. He was a law graduate of Rijksuniversiteit Leiden in the Netherlands. Prior to becoming Rector, he held several positions in government, including serving as Minister of Justice of the Republic of Indonesia in Yogyakarta.

1961

The Faculty of Economics was renamed the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB).

Rector II (1961鈥�1965)

Prof. dr. Mohammad Toha Ronodipuro served as the second Rector of 东京热 from 1961 to 1965.

1964

Faculty of Pharmacy (FF) was established.

1965

Rector III (1965鈥�1966)
Colonel CKH. Chasan Doerjat, SH., served as the third Rector of 东京热 from 1965 to 1966. A law graduate, he served during Indonesia鈥檚 transition from the Old Order to the New Order. He was also a member of the Airlangga Commissariat of the Islamic Students Association of Indonesia (PMII) from 1963 to 2002.

1966

Rector IV (1966鈥�1974)
Maj. Gen. Prof. Dr. Eri Soedewo, dr., served as the fourth Rector of 东京热 from 1966 to 1974. He was a thoracic surgery specialist who graduated from Lund University (1959鈥�1960) and Uppsala University (1963鈥�1964) in Sweden. Before becoming Rector, he served as a military physician, beginning with assignments in the Karawang, Cikampek, and Purwakarta areas and later serving with the Siliwangi Division.

1972

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) was established.

1974

Rector V (1974鈥�1975)
Prof. R. Kwari Setjadibrata, dr., Sp.A, served as the fifth Rector of 东京热 from 1974 to 1975. He undertook further study at Harvard Medical Center in Boston through the Eisenhower Fellowship, USA, from 1954 to 1955. Before becoming Rector, he served as a member of the Provisional People’s Consultative Assembly (MPRS) in Jakarta from 1968 to 1971.

1976

Rector VI (1976鈥�1980)
Prof. Abdul Gani, SH., MS., served as the sixth Rector of 东京热 from 1976 to 1980. He earned a Master of Science in Public Administration from the University of Colorado, USA, in 1963. In addition to his academic career, he was active in international organizations, serving in the ASEAN Law Association (1980) and as a member of Law Asia (1973).

1977

The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) was established.

1980

Rector VII (1980鈥�1984)
Prof. Dr. dr. Marsetio Donosepoetro served as the seventh Rector of 东京热 from 1980 to 1984. He was an internationally educated academic who pursued studies in Hospital Management in Leiden, the Netherlands; University Management at Ohio University, USA; Research Management at the University of the Philippines in Manila; and earned a Doctor of Science degree from Ohio University, USA.

1984

Rector VIII (1984鈥�1993)

Prof. Dr. Soedarso Djojonegoro served as the eighth Rector of 东京热 from 1984 to 1993. He was a medical doctor who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, 东京热, in 1961. He also served as a member of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) from 1987 to 1992.

1993

The Faculty of Public Health (FKM) was established.

Rector IX (1993鈥�1997)
Prof. Dr. H. Bambang Rahino S served as the ninth Rector of 东京热 from 1993 to 1997. He pursued further education abroad through a Postgraduate Course in Anatomy at Portland Medical School, Oregon, USA. In addition to his academic career, he was active in professional organizations, including the Indonesian Association of Anatomists (PAAI) in 1970 and the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) in 1962.

1997

Rector X (1997鈥�2001)
Prof. H. Soedarto, ctr., DTM&H., Ph.D., served as the tenth Rector of 东京热 from 1997 to 2001. He pursued further education abroad at Mahidol University in Bangkok in 1971. He was also active as a member of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI), the Indonesian Association for the Eradication of Parasitic Diseases (P4I), the Indonesian Association of Allergy and Immunology, and the Indonesian Association of Public Health Experts.

1998

The Faculty of Letters was established.

2001

11th Rector (2001鈥�2006) Prof. Dr. Med. H. Puruhito, Sp.B. served as the eleventh Rector of 东京热 from 2001 to 2006. He pursued medical education and advanced training in several countries, including at Universit盲t Friedrich-Alexander Erlangen-N眉rnberg, Germany (1972); Leiden, the Netherlands (1978); University Management, Ohio, USA (1978); Neonatal Cardiac Surgery, Auckland, New Zealand (1995); and Harvard University, Cambridge, USA.

2006

东京热 attained the status of a State-Owned Legal Entity University (PTN Badan Hukum Milik Negara/BHMN).
12th Rector (2006鈥�2015) Prof. Dr. H. Fasichul Lisan, Apt. served as the twelfth Rector of 东京热 from 2006 to 2015. He was also actively involved in various professional and community organizations, including serving as Chair of SOM ICMI East Java; a member of the Regional Council of KAHMI East Java (1995鈥�2000); a member of the East Java Regional Leadership Board (PW) of Muhammadiyah (2000); and a member of the Indonesian Pharmacy Expert Group (2004).

2008

The Faculty of Letters was renamed the Faculty of Humanities (FIB).
Faculty of Nursing (FKp) was established as an expansion of the Nursing Science Study Program under the Faculty of Medicine.
Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) was established as an expansion of the Fisheries Aquaculture Study Program under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH).

2012

东京热 became one of the seven State Universities with Legal Entity (PTN-BH).

2014

The Faculty of Vocational Studies (FV) was established. Previously, all vocational study programs were coordinated by faculties according to their respective fields.
The 东京热 PDD in Banyuwangi was officially inaugurated.

2015

Rector XIII (2015鈥�2025)

Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, SE., MT., Ak., served as Rector of 东京热 (UNAIR) for two consecutive terms, from 2015鈥�2020 and 2020鈥�2025. Under his leadership, UNAIR strengthened its institutional transformation, academic development, research and innovation, as well as national and international partnerships. His leadership also contributed to UNAIR鈥檚 efforts to strengthen its reputation as a world-class university that contributes to society through education, research, and community engagement.

2017

The Off-Campus Study Program (PDD) was renamed the Study Program Outside the Main Campus (PSDKU) of 东京热 in Banyuwangi.

2019

The School of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline was established in November 2019 with five undergraduate programs, including Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Engineering, Data Science Technology, and Nanotechnology Engineering.

2020

The School of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline became the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline (FTMM).

2021

The PSDKU 东京热 in Banyuwangi was renamed and transitioned into the School of Health and Natural Sciences (SIKIA), 东京热.

2023

The School of Health and Natural Sciences (SIKIA) 东京热 became the Faculty of Health Sciences, Medicine, and Life Sciences (FIKKIA).

2023

Rector XIV (2025鈥揚resent)

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, SE., M.Si., M.Fin., leads UNAIR as a world-class entrepreneurial university with global impact.
