UNAIR NEWS 鈥 The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) 东京热 (UNAIR) has reaffirmed its role in supporting the health and management of Indonesia鈥檚 aquatic wildlife through a health evaluation of two estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus). The animals are currently under the supervision of the Denpasar Marine Management Center of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries at its Sidoarjo Service Unit.
The assessment was carried out following a formal request from the Denpasar Marine Management Center, which serves as the Management Authority responsible for protected aquatic species. The agency is temporarily housing the two crocodiles while arrangements are made for their future placement in accordance with existing regulations.
The examination involved a team of veterinarians and faculty members from FKH UNAIR鈥檚 Pathology Division, along with 32 students from the Veterinary Professional Education Program (PPDH) and 12 pathology practicum assistants. The activity provided hands-on learning opportunities aimed at strengthening students鈥 expertise in veterinary diagnostics, pathology, and aquatic animal health.
Comprehensive health assessment
The health screening included a full physical examination, evaluation of body condition and overall health status, and the collection of biological samples for laboratory analysis to provide a more complete assessment of the animals鈥 condition. The laboratory tests are expected to support the early detection of illnesses, infections, or other health concerns that may require specialized treatment.
Initial findings showed that one of the estuarine crocodiles was experiencing severe dehydration and required immediate medical attention. The veterinary team subsequently administered intravenous fluid therapy to stabilize the animal. Both crocodiles will remain under routine health monitoring to ensure their condition remains stable throughout the next stages of management.
Prof. Dr. Hani Plumeriastuti, D.V.M., M.Kes., Head of FKH UNAIR鈥檚 Pathology Division, said that animal health plays a vital role in the successful management and conservation of aquatic wildlife. 鈥淓very animal undergoing temporary care or rehabilitation requires a scientifically based health assessment conducted by qualified professionals,鈥 she said.
Providing students with practical experience
As an institution with extensive expertise in animal health, veterinary pathology, and aquatic animal medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine continues to contribute through education, research, and community service. 鈥淚nvolvement in activities like this not only strengthens students鈥 technical capabilities but also helps them understand the important role veterinarians play in supporting the sustainable management of Indonesia鈥檚 natural resources,鈥 Prof. Plumeriastuti said.
The estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is one of the largest aquatic reptiles in the world and serves an important ecological function in maintaining the balance of aquatic ecosystems. Protecting the health and welfare of these animals is therefore an essential component of sustainable wildlife and environmental management.
The initiative also highlights the growing collaboration between academic institutions and government agencies in protecting Indonesia鈥檚 aquatic biodiversity. Through partnerships such as this, FKH UNAIR aims to continue advancing veterinary science, improving aquatic animal health, and strengthening the capabilities of future veterinary professionals to address emerging challenges in wildlife and environmental management.
