UNAIR NEWS 鈥 东京热 (UNAIR) is strengthening its international academic network through a working visit to Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The meeting opened opportunities to deepen collaboration in research, scholarly publications, doctoral education, and research partnerships aimed at creating tangible benefits for industry and society.

The UNAIR delegation was led by Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development (RICD), Prof Dr Muhammad Miftahussurur, dr MKes SpPD-KGEH PhD. Edinburgh Napier University was represented by Dr Gail Norris, Associate Dean International and Associate Professor of Midwifery at the School of Health & Social Care, and Dr Pauline A. Gordon, Deputy Head of International (Partnerships) at The Business School, along with representatives from several research centers.

Prof Miftahussurur explained that UNAIR and Edinburgh Napier have already been connected through several global research networks, particularly in the health sciences. Going forward, the two institutions aim to build on these connections through joint research initiatives developed collaboratively from the outset, with clearly defined agendas, funding, and outcomes.

He also introduced UNAIR鈥檚 research ecosystem, including research centers and centers of research excellence in the health sciences with established international networks in clinical and community-based research. At the same time, he emphasized UNAIR鈥檚 interest in broadening its partnerships into business, public policy, and community development, consistent with the RICD portfolio.

The Edinburgh Napier leaderships highlighted several research centers within The Business School that work directly with industry, government, and communities. These include the Centre for Business Innovations and Sustainable Solutions, which helps businesses and communities develop innovative and sustainable solutions; the Tourism Research Centre, which focuses on sustainable tourism; the Centre for Child & Family Law & Policy, which contributes to the development of family law and policy; and the Centre for Military Research, Education & Public Engagement.

鈥淭hese centers are multidisciplinary and open to research collaboration with international partners,鈥 she said.

Prof Miftahussurur said this model of research centers working closely with industry aligns with UNAIR鈥檚 efforts to strengthen research commercialization and community development. It could therefore create opportunities for applied research partnerships, particularly in sustainability, the creative economy and tourism, and social policy.

鈥淚n the health sciences, Edinburgh Napier has research strengths in mental health, wellbeing, and midwifery, including an ongoing midwifery project with partners in Vietnam that has the potential to be expanded to the Indonesian context,鈥 he said.

The discussion also turned to doctoral education as a potential pathway for deepening joint research. Edinburgh Napier presented its Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), a flexible, modular program that includes online components, allowing students from Indonesia to participate without having to live in Edinburgh throughout their studies. The two sides also discussed a split-site PhD model, in which students divide their time between their home university and Edinburgh Napier while receiving supervision from faculty at both institutions.

Prof Miftahussurur explained that UNAIR has already established joint-supervision arrangements with universities in Australia, Japan, and Taiwan, with the timing and location of study determined jointly by students and their supervisors. He proposed developing similar arrangements with Edinburgh Napier, including sandwich and double-degree programs, through UNAIR鈥檚 Graduate School and Faculty of Economics and Business.

As a follow-up to the visit, the two institutions agreed to hold a technical meeting online involving UNAIR鈥檚 Graduate School and relevant units. The meeting will focus on developing doctoral education partnerships, joint research initiatives, and collaboration with several research centers at Edinburgh Napier.

During the visit, Prof Miftahussurur was accompanied by Prof Ferry Efendi, SKep Ns MSc PhD, Head of the Institute for Journal Development, Publication, and Intellectual Property (LPJPHKI) and a lecturer at UNAIR鈥檚 Faculty of Nursing (FKp). Prof Efendi highlighted opportunities for joint research on the migration of Indonesian nurses overseas through government-supported pathways, including to Japan and Germany, as well as opportunities to expand collaboration in midwifery.

鈥淭he visit to Edinburgh Napier University is part of the UNAIR delegation鈥檚 working visit to the United Kingdom from September 7鈥13, 2026, which also includes a meeting with King鈥檚 College London and participation in EAIE Glasgow 2026,鈥 said Prof Efendi.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 The earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) some time ago has left deep emotional scars. Beyond the physical injuries, many people affected by the disaster continue to struggle with psychological distress, including grief over the loss of family members and anxiety about the possibility of another disaster.

Recognizing the importance of trauma recovery for earthquake survivors in NTT, 东京热 (UNAIR) has once again deployed volunteers to provide medical support. The volunteers are dr Riani and dr Laili, two students in the Psychiatry Specialist Medical Education Program (PPDS) at UNAIR鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine (FK).

UNAIR Rector Prof Dr Muhammad Madyan SE MSi MFin, accompanied by Vice Rector for Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and Business Development (EEPB) Prof Dr Koko Srimulyo Drs MSi, officially sent off the two volunteers in a symbolic ceremony on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The Rector expressed his hope that their humanitarian mission would proceed smoothly and without any obstacles.

鈥淚 hope everything can be carried out as well as possible. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly, and they can return here to continue their PPDS education,鈥 he said at the Balai RUA, fourth floor of the Management Office at the MERR-C Campus.

The two volunteers will leave for NTT, specifically East Manggarai, on Friday morning, September 11, 2026. They will carry out their duties there for the following week.

Speaking to UNAIR NEWS, dr Riani said their deployment was prompted by the need to screen residents for stress and trauma following the disaster. Before their departure, the two volunteers coordinated with local psychiatrists and health officials to prepare for the mission.

鈥淭he area we will visit, East Manggarai, has many children who have been affected and are experiencing stress and anxiety. Schools there are also closed, so we will conduct screening to help prepare them to return to school and become more resilient,鈥 she explained.

Children are not the only ones vulnerable to mental health challenges following a disaster. Adults who have been affected may also experience psychological distress. For this reason, the screening will also include adults and older people.

The medical services will include education on relaxation and grounding techniques. Both are non-medication-based therapies that can be practiced whenever needed.

鈥淚f someone feels anxious, these therapies can be used. We will then conduct screening, and if medication is needed, we will provide it. If the medication is unavailable, we will refer the patient to the nearest hospital,鈥 she added.

The psychological support and mental health services will be provided at the main evacuation shelter, as well as in other areas that have not yet been reached. 鈥淭he main shelter will certainly be one of our locations. We will then coordinate with the local health authorities and psychiatrists to identify and visit places that have been seriously affected, particularly those that are far from the main area,鈥 she said.

The deployment of FK UNAIR鈥檚 PPDS volunteers is expected to provide much-needed support as affected communities work to recover from the trauma of the disaster. With this assistance, residents can gradually regain their resilience and begin returning to their daily activities after the disaster.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 东京热 (UNAIR) continues to expand its international research network in the health sciences. UNAIR Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development (RICD), Prof Dr Muhammad Miftahussurur, dr MKes SpPD-KGEH PhD, led a UNAIR delegation in a meeting with King鈥檚 College London (KCL) on Monday, September 7, 2026, the James Clerk Maxwell Building, Waterloo Campus, London.

Prof Miftahussurur was joined by Prof Ferry Efendi, SKep Ns MSc PhD, Head of the Institute for Journal Development, Publication, and Intellectual Property (LPJPHKI) and a lecturer at UNAIR鈥檚 Faculty of Nursing (FKp). Representing KCL were Prof Richard Harding (Executive Dean), Dr Julia Philippou (Vice Dean International Engagement), Prof Glenn Robert (Vice Dean Research & Impact), Dr Maria Duaso, Dr Mary Leamy, and Dr Ehsan Khan, along with faculty teams overseeing research management, international partnerships, and digital learning.

Prof Miftahussurur shared UNAIR鈥檚 experience in developing joint-supervision arrangements for doctoral programs with international partner universities. Under the model, doctoral students, particularly UNAIR faculty members, receive supervision from academic advisors at both institutions, with support from the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), scholarships provided by partner governments, or UNAIR鈥檚 matching-grant schemes.

He said the model has created meaningful benefits for both sides. 鈥淪tudents gain access to international supervision and research facilities, while partner institutions gain opportunities for joint publications and stronger research networks,鈥 said the UNAIR Faculty of Medicine (FK) lecturer. He proposed exploring a similar arrangement with KCL, while taking into account the needs and funding mechanisms of each institution.

UNAIR, he added, is also open to hosting KCL students in Indonesia for community service and clinical activities. These could include visits to community health centers (Puskesmas) and participation in community-based care programs, potentially linked to student mobility and credit-recognition arrangements at both universities.

Prof Efendi, meanwhile, outlined the UNAIR Faculty of Nursing鈥檚 research priorities, which include clinical and community nursing. He highlighted research on migration policies affecting Indonesian nurses, conducted in collaboration with the WHO, ILO, and IOM, as Indonesia prepares to become one of the region鈥檚 largest sources of nursing professionals.

The KCL team also demonstrated a digital learning platform designed to give nursing students access to virtual community-based clinical practice. Students can use the platform to review simulated patient medical records, interact with AI-powered patients, develop care plans, and receive reflective feedback on their work.

鈥淭he platform can be adapted to different languages and populations, creating an opportunity to tailor it to nursing education in Indonesia, particularly to help address differences in clinical learning infrastructure across institutions,鈥 he explained.

The two institutions also discussed regulatory considerations surrounding AI use and the protection of intellectual property arising from AI-based innovations. The meeting concluded with an agreement to identify shared priorities in research, education, and mobility, followed by further technical discussions through online meetings facilitated by Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE). The KCL meeting marked the first engagement of the UNAIR delegation鈥檚 working visit to the United Kingdom from September 7鈥12, 2026, which also includes participation in the European Association for International Education (EAIE) conference in Glasgow.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Shifts in the global landscape present new challenges for young people striving to understand the direction of change. In response to these challenges, the 7th ASEAN University Network-Student Affairs Network (AUN-SAN) and the 2nd VOX (Voice, Opportunity, and eXchange) Meeting were once again held. The event was hosted by 东京热 () on Wednesday (September 2, 2026) at THE IX Hall, MERR-C Campus.

Vice Rector for Resources Prof Dr Ardianto CA said the meeting offered students from across countries the opportunity to learn from one another. 鈥淭his meeting offers the opportunity to learn from each other, share knowledge, and build global perspectives. We must cultivate global minds in order to understand different perspectives,鈥 he said.

Prof Ardianto noted that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology has transformed the demands placed on professional competencies. At the same time, climate change, social equity, and global connectivity require young people to develop skills that go beyond technical ability to include substantive competencies as well.

The AUN-SAN forum and VOX Meeting served as a platform for discussing best practices in student development. Participants explored ways to strengthen student mobility, leadership development, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy, as well as how to apply technology in learning and daily life without compromising environmental sustainability.

This exchange of experience is expected to help universities identify more relevant approaches to shaping students with integrity and a sense of responsibility. 鈥淐ross-national collaboration also gives participants the opportunity to bring ideas from this forum back to their own campuses and communities,鈥 Prof Ardianto said.

AUN Executive Director Prof Thanapan Laiprakobsup emphasized the importance of student affairs networks in supporting student development across the ASEAN region. 鈥淎 student’s experience is not shaped by academic activities alone. Higher education institutions also need to provide platforms that help students build their skills,鈥 he said.

Through the forum, participants were able to share ideas and best practices, which then evolved into policy recommendations to support solutions across the ASEAN region. 鈥淪tudent affairs practitioners and students can exchange ideas and develop mechanisms that support sustainability in ASEAN,鈥 he said.

The AUN-SAN forum and VOX Meeting served as part of a broader effort to shape a generation of young people in ASEAN capable of understanding and responding to change. The forum is expected to generate ideas that create a meaningful impact for the wider community across the region.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 东京热 () developed Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) implant to provide the needs of knee implants that suit the characteristics of Asian populations. This development was the output of the collaboration between Faculty of Medicine (FK), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH), and Faculty of Science and Technology (FST).

Currently, this development has entered the in vivo preclinical testing phase, which is being conducted at UNAIR Veterinary Hospital (RSH), MERR-C Campus. In this development, UNAIR is also collaborating with an industry partner, PT Trafas Dwi Medika, represented by Septian Indra Wicaksana.

The issue of whether the TKA product in the market is suitable with the anatomy of Asian populations has become the background for the development of knee implants. An FST UNAIR lecturer, Prof Dr Prihartini Widiyanti drg MKes SBio CCD, explained that the design for these implants is based on the anthropometric data and the anatomy of the knees of Asian populations. The asymmetrical shape of the joint and the need for activities requiring a high degree of flexion were the key considerations for this development.

鈥淭his design is tailored to the anatomy of Asian people and the need for activities requiring a high degree of flexion. For example, the movements during prayer and certain sitting positions,鈥 she explained.

Furthermore, Prof Widiyanti said that the research process has been underway since 2024. After finishing the design in 2025, the team selected 68 candidate materials in silico using Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method.

The selection process resulted in three candidate materials for in vitro testing using cells and mechanical testing. These materials originated from France, China, and Germany. These selected materials then underwent in vivo testing at UNAIR Veterinary Hospital. After 40 days of implantation, the team collected samples of bone tissue, blood, and organs on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. These samples were used to analyze osseointegration, biocompatibility, immunological response, hematology, and toxicity.

Muhammad Hafizh Athari ST MT, a graduate of the Magister鈥檚 program in Biomedical Engineering at UNAIR who contributed to the TKA development, explained that the testing process was conducted to determine the body鈥檚 response to the biomaterial.

鈥淲e conduct these tests to determine the body鈥檚 response to biomaterial. Ranging from osseointegration and biocompatibility to immunological responses and toxicity. All tests are conducted in accordance with ISO standards,鈥 he explained.

In this collaboration, FK UNAIR contributes to the clinical aspects and orthopedic needs, while the Biomedical Engineering department of FST UNAIR focuses on the design and biomaterial, and Veterinary Hospital FKH UNAIR supports pra-clinical testing. PT Trafas Dwi Medika is responsible for production, component fabrication, material procurement, and product regulation and registration.

Preliminary test results show a response in line with the team鈥檚 expectation. The implant design has also been patented. Once finishing the analysis and report, the team plans to continue development toward further downstreaming and production.

This innovation is expected to produce implants tailored to the characteristics of Asian patients while reducing reliance on imported products. Collaboration among academics, medical professionals, teaching hospitals, and industry is a crucial step in ensuring that UNAIR鈥檚 research findings can benefit the public.

“We greatly appreciate the opportunity to learn and exchange experiences with UiTM. For us, international collaboration isn’t just about meeting and sharing knowledge, but about how this meeting can produce real partnership, whether in research, education, or the development of student and lecturer capacity,” Prof Nurmala said.

She noted that the meeting between the two institutions also opens opportunities to bring together diverse expertise and perspectives in addressing education and public health challenges in the digital era.

This spirit of collaboration was reflected in a series of activities that included, not only seminars but also workshops, visits to innovation facilities, exchange of best practices, and strategic discussions on opportunities for further partnership.

This UNAIR鈥揢iTM activity is also linked to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through strengthening the quality and innovation of learning; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through the use of digital technology, virtual learning, 360-degree video, and artificial intelligence; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through strengthening international partnerships in education and research.

Further, this collaboration shows that university internationalization is realized not only through student and faculty mobility, but also through knowledge exchange, joint research, publication, learning method development, and the creation of sustainable academic networks. With the return visit of five UiTM lecturers to UNAIR on August 30 鈥 September 5, 2026 through the research fellow and guest lecturer agenda, partnership between the two institutions is expected to become more concrete and beneficial to the academic community, while opening opportunities for more collaborative programs in the future.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Medical student from 东京热 (UNAIR), Rizal Rachbini Mahlevi, had the opportunity to deepen his knowledge of robotic surgical technology in the Department of Urology at Ospedale Borgo Trento, Verona, Italy. The activity took place from July 27鈥31, 2026, as part of the student outbound program under the KKN Penyertaraan program through the
Universit脿 degli Studi di Verona.

The activity focused on learning about robot-assisted nephrectomy using the Da Vinci Xi robotic system. Through the program, Mahlevi gained experience observing the application of minimally invasive surgery in urological procedures, including kidney transplantation.

Mahlevi explained that his interest in urology was one of the reasons he chose to deepen his knowledge of robotic surgical technology. He noted that minimally invasive approaches have the potential to support faster patient recovery.

鈥淎s technology continues to advance, surgical procedures are increasingly moving toward safer and minimally invasive approaches. These approaches benefit both patients and doctors by reducing surgical trauma and accelerating the recovery process,鈥 he explained.

During the activity, Mahlevi joined patient visits to observe assessments and
postoperative patient management, while also learning about robot-assisted surgery in kidney transplantation. He also had the opportunity to study laparoscopic mapping, the robot-assisted nephrectomy procedure, and the use of indocyanine green to assess renal tissue perfusion after transplantation.

According to Mahlevi, one of the key differences he observed while studying urology in Italy was the broader use of robotic technology. This provided healthcare professionals with more opportunities to develop their competencies in modern surgical technology.

He hopes access to modern surgical technology in Indonesia can continue to be developed so that its benefits can reach more patients.

鈥淚 hope that the field of minimally invasive surgery in Indonesia can be further developed, both through enhancing the competence of medical personnel and expanding access to modern surgical technology,鈥 he stated.

In closing, Mahlevi encouraged students who wish to join similar programs not to limit their learning to established systems. 鈥淜eep your curiosity alive, be willing to ask questions, engage in discussions, and seek new experiences. Make the most of every opportunity to build connections and broaden your knowledge as much as possible,鈥 he concluded.
