UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Understanding social reality does not always begin with field research. For Rusydan Hadid, literary works serve as the gateway to exploring various issues, which he then captures in a zine titled Spatial Spiritual. Drawing on his experience studying in the Indonesian Literature Program at the Faculty of Humanities (FIB), 东京热 (), he highlights the dynamics of life in the Kenjeran coastal community through a blend of writing and visual documentation.

For the zine鈥檚 author, who is currently pursuing postgraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh, Spatial Spiritual emerged from more than a simple desire to create. The zine originated from his habit of reading and analyzing literary works, which gradually led him to understand the social realities around him. In his view, literature opens up space to question issues in society while also prompting a closer look at realities on the ground.

鈥淲hen it comes to reality, I actually encountered literary works first. When those works are unpacked, that鈥檚 where the main bridge lies, and it鈥檚 what makes work like Spatial Spiritual possible. Literature sparks curiosity about issues on the ground and opens up opportunities to understand the reality around us,鈥 the UNAIR alumnus said.

It was that perspective that led him to highlight the lives of the Kenjeran coastal community in Spatial Spiritual. The zine brings forward the voices of coastal children as a reflection on the direction of development in the area where they grew up.

He shared that one of the most memorable experiences while pursuing his undergraduate degree in Indonesian Literature at FIB UNAIR was the Ecocriticism course, which introduced him to ways of reading the relationship between humans, the environment, and literary works. For him, the creative process is a way to bring the knowledge gained in class back to life.

Through his work, he not only applies the theories he learned during his studies but also deepens his understanding of the issues he encounters in the field. For that reason, he added, Indonesian Literature graduates have a wide space in which to create, especially when the work grows out of genuine concern for an issue.

“Whatever you make is a work. Through creating, I come to better understand what I鈥檓 learning. And when we create, we also need something we truly care about. For the zine, I chose to focus on the Kenjeran coastal community because it鈥檚 an issue I wanted to understand more deeply,” he said.

Through Spatial Spiritual, Hadid hopes his work serves not only as a storytelling medium, but also as an invitation for readers to revisit social realities that often go unnoticed. He hopes Indonesian Literature students will make the most of the wide space available for creative work, without limiting that work to literary forms alone. For him, the academic foundation gained during his studies serves as a way to read reality while producing work that speaks to the issues people face.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 The medical field offers a broad and dynamic career path, not only limited to a clinical practice room or hospital. A prime example is dr Maria Arni Stella, an alumna from Faculty of Medicine (FK) 东京热 () who has successfully built an international career as a Wellness Manager in the Maldives, specifically at Anantara Kihavah and Heritance Aarah.

Stella, as she is warmly called, is a graduate of medical school from the 2013 cohort. In the Maldives, she handles a crucial role in leading holistic wellness treatment operational and advanced fitness programs for global guests.

Stella鈥檚 journey on the international stage started from her first step in exploring the aesthetic field in Bali after completing her medical education program. It started with a three-month opportunity as a visiting practitioner at the invitation of an Australian clinic owner. She was tasked with introducing a variety of modern skin treatments such as skin booster, botox, and epigenetic testing using hair strand analysis to map out ideal nutrition and dietary patterns for the body.聽聽

This opportunity that was initially planned to last only three months, grew rapidly. Looking at the high market demand and business success achieved, Stella鈥檚 employment contract was extended to nearly two years, leading her to a strategic position as a Wellness Manager.

The transition from hospital and conventional clinic environment to the luxury hospitality industry gave a new and challenging experience. At high-end resorts, a doctor will not only focus on medical procedures, but also build direct engagement with the guests through various exclusive agendas, such as festival events.

From these interactions, Stella captured a shift in global health trends, which no longer seek for mere aesthetic and spa relaxation, but focusing on longevity and cellular health at the molecular level. Under her leadership, health and fitness facilities at this resort continue to innovate by presenting flagship holistic programs.

Several of her flagship programs are Advanced Therapies such as the utilization of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Cryotherapy (a combination of cold plunge pools and saunas for muscle recovery and metabolism), and LED Therapy for cellular rejuvenation and injury management. Second, Advanced IV Therapy. Third, Comprehensive Retreat programs lasting 7 to 14 days that combine epigenetic testing, specialized nutritional menu guidance in collaboration with executive chefs, personal trainer assistance, as well as sound healing and lymphatic massage to care for the physical body, mind, and soul comprehensively.聽

As a manager in the hospitality sector, business orientation became one of the proud benchmarks of success. Stella successfully shift general perception that often views spas merely as secondary hotel amenities into one of the main business drivers.

鈥淚n terms of business, we successfully achieved the budget targets around 100 thousand USD per month consistently. The spa, which was initially underestimated, finally recorded the highest Google Review among all departments for a full year,鈥 Stella said.

Beyond financial achievements, she has also opened up a broad opportunity for other medical workers, including nurse injector and therapists, to pursue a career path in the international stage through global-standard training in various preventive health programs.

In her journey conquering a global career path, dr Stella recalls the fundamental values instilled during her studies at FK UNAIR. According to her, education in FK UNAIR not only shapes strong clinical competencies but also equips the students with an entrepreneurial spirit and an open-minded perspective toward new opportunity and point of view.

鈥淒on鈥檛 get a mental block thinking that going abroad is difficult or financially burdensome. The competency exam in Indonesia is far more challenging. If there is an opportunity and it is your dream, go get it,鈥 she advised.聽

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 In response to the increasingly competitive maritime industry, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) 东京热 (UNAIR) hosted a guest lecture featuring alumni. Titled 鈥淐areer Opportunities and Transformation for Young Professionals in the Modern Fisheries and Marine Industry,鈥 the event took place on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) at the Candradimuka Auditorium, NANO Building, MERR-C Campus. The session explored strategies for breaking into global markets while achieving financial independence during university years.

Through the alumni guest lecture, FPK encouraged students to shift their mindset, step beyond their comfort zones, and recognize the vast opportunities offered by the blue economy. Two FPK alumni, Muhammad Cesar Briliandi, SPi, MSc, and Muhammad Syarif Satriyo Samudra, SPi, were invited to share their experiences as role models and sources of inspiration for students.

Briliandi, who now works as a marine biologist in the Maldives, recounted a journey that was far from straightforward. Admitted to FPK UNAIR through the independent admissions pathway, he admitted that he initially felt he had chosen the wrong major. However, reflecting on the financial sacrifices made by his parents became the turning point that motivated him to persevere and complete his studies.

That decision ultimately led to major opportunities, including earning a master鈥檚 degree in Taiwan and securing his current position as a marine biologist. His strong professional performance also enabled him to obtain several advanced professional diving certifications at no personal cost.

鈥淪tarting from the Open Water level, I was trained all the way to Assistant Instructor free of charge. If I had paid for those certifications myself, the costs would have been enormous. Today, my job includes guiding tourists and major influencers on exclusive, high-end trips,鈥 he said.

Despite his success, Briliandi urged FPK students to broaden their perspective on career possibilities. 鈥淩emember, our oceans are vast. The world doesn鈥檛 end in Java or Surabaya. Your future is not limited to Surabaya or even Java,鈥 he emphasized.

Meanwhile, Samudra highlighted the importance of adopting a strategic mindset when identifying commercial opportunities in the fisheries sector. He cited examples such as cultivating Gracilaria verrucosa seaweed for rapid cash flow and developing IoT-based smart floating net cages. He also encouraged students to leverage university competition grants as a safe environment for business experimentation.

Muhammad Syarif Satriyo Samudra, SPi, a 2021 Aquaculture graduate of FPK UNAIR, delivers a presentation during the guest lecture on Tuesday (June 2, 2026). (Photo: By courtesy)

鈥淭ake advantage of your status as students by actively participating in programs such as P2MW, PKM, and business grant competitions. These programs provide the best environment for experimentation. Even if a venture fails, you are not risking your own capital because the funding comes from the government. Most importantly, develop your skills and secure market access before starting production,鈥 he explained.

Samudra began building his entrepreneurial career while still in college. He experienced numerous setbacks while developing his businesses, but those challenges helped forge the mental resilience that has become his greatest asset in navigating market realities and industry power structures.

His resilience was also shaped by personal experiences. Losing his father while in high school became a powerful source of motivation to keep moving forward. At the same time, witnessing the hardships faced by people around him served as a constant reminder never to stop striving for improvement.

鈥淪trengthen your mindset, business requires mental toughness. The greatest form of poverty is laziness. Your success five years from now depends on what you do today,鈥 Samudra said.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Building a career in the financial services sector requires both strong commitment and sharp analytical skills. Mufli Asmawidjaja SH ME, a graduate of the Faculty of Law 东京热 (FH UNAIR), exemplifies those qualities. He currently serves as Executive Director and Head of the Legal Department at Indonesia鈥檚 Financial Services Authority (OJK). By combining his legal education from UNAIR with a master鈥檚 degree in economics, he has played a key role in overseeing legal and regulatory frameworks amid the rapid growth of Indonesia鈥檚 digital financial innovation sector.

Building character through the academic foundation of FH UNAIR

Reflecting on his years as a student in 1990, Asmawidjaja said that a career at an institution such as OJK had never crossed his mind, particularly because the authority had not yet been established at the time. For him, choosing FH UNAIR was driven by a belief that legal studies provide an essential foundation for understanding governance and public life, while also serving as a tool for advancing social justice.

鈥淭he greatest asset I gained from the university was not only legal knowledge, but also the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively,鈥 he said.

Combining Law and Economics to navigate digital finance challenges

As a legal scholar with advanced training in economics, Asmawidjaja has been able to integrate the two disciplines into a powerful analytical framework for developing public policies that have broad societal impact. His legal background, he said, provides a systematic way of thinking that has proven critical in his current role at OJK, particularly amid the disruption brought about by rapid advances in digital financial technology.

鈥淭he greatest challenge today is the pace of change driven by innovation in the digital financial sector. Regulations are expected to adapt continuously to evolving developments. This is where my legal education at UNAIR has shaped and strengthened my capabilities,鈥 he explained.

Living university鈥檚 motto and upholding integrity

As an alumnus, Asmawidjaja said he deeply embraces the university鈥檚 enduring motto, 鈥淓xcellence with Morality.鈥 He emphasized that the phrase has become both a guiding life principle and a moral compass throughout his public service career.

鈥淔or me, Excellence with Morality is not merely a slogan but a way of life. Competence and professionalism are important, but they must be built upon a foundation of integrity and moral responsibility,鈥 he said.

Concluding the interview, Asmawidjaja offered advice to current UNAIR students. He encouraged them to make the most of their university years by focusing on personal growth rather than becoming overly concerned about the future. He also urged students to participate actively in organizations and extracurricular activities to develop adaptability, leadership skills, and professional ethics.

鈥淭he professional world does not only need intelligent people; it also needs individuals who can adapt, communicate effectively, and uphold ethical standards. Most importantly, never stop learning. The world will continue to change, but those who remain committed to learning and maintaining integrity will always have opportunities to contribute to the nation,鈥 he concluded.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Muhammad Cesar Briliandi, an alumnus of the Aquaculture Program, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK), 东京热 (UNAIR), is now playing a significant role in the marine science field. The 2016 UNAIR graduate currently works as a Marine Biologist at Sub-Oceanic, Le M茅ridien Maldives Resort & Spa, under the management of the global hotel network Marriott International.

After earning his undergraduate degree, Briliandi continued pursuing higher education by obtaining a master鈥檚 scholarship at National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), one of Asia鈥檚 leading institutions in marine studies. The international academic experience broadened his expertise in aquatic resource management and marine conservation while strengthening his professional competence as a marine scientist. The combination of his aquaculture foundation from UNAIR and advanced studies at NTOU became an important foundation for his current strategic role as a marine biologist in the Maldives.

Briliandi explained that one of the most memorable experiences during his university years was facing an examination he referred to as the jedogtest. According to him, the test trained students to develop discipline, manage limited time effectively, and understand that success largely depends on personal commitment and perseverance.

Muhammad Cesar Briliandi, alumnus of the Aquaculture Program at FPK UNAIR. (Photo: By courtesy)

鈥淭hrough that process, I learned that discipline and the ability to work under pressure are inseparable skills in the professional world, whether in laboratories, fieldwork, or multicultural work environments like the one I face today,鈥 he said.

For Briliandi, the skills he gained at university extended beyond technical knowledge in aquaculture. He also developed the character of an independent and adaptable learner. He emphasized that independence is essential and that failure itself is a valuable part of the learning process.

In his role as a marine biologist, Briliandi is part of a professional community that focuses not only on marine tourism operations but also on research activities and guest-oriented scientific programs. Marine biologists at his workplace serve dual roles: as scientists with expertise in marine ecology and as communicators who bridge scientific knowledge with visitors鈥 tourism experiences. This position places Briliandi not only behind the scenes but also as a scientific representative introducing the importance of marine conservation to an international audience.

On a daily basis, Briliandi works with a team of approximately 15 people within a resort ecosystem that employs around 300 staff members in total. In this environment, he contributes to designing and implementing educational programs that encourage guests to understand, respect, and protect marine ecosystems and the surrounding environment.

One of the key impacts of his work has been increasing visitor awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy oceans and coral reef ecosystems. 鈥淭hrough educational tourism programs, we invite visitors to appreciate the beauty of the underwater world while also understanding the threats it faces, ranging from coral reef degradation to marine debris carried by ocean currents,鈥 he explained.

In the Maldives, these efforts align closely with government-led conservation initiatives and are supported by coral conservation organizations dedicated to preserving reef health and sustainability.

The knowledge Briliandi gained in aquatic biology, ecology, and aquatic organism management during his studies has become an essential foundation for understanding the marine ecosystem dynamics in his current workplace. Nevertheless, he emphasized that beyond academic expertise, a willingness to continue learning and the ability to understand different personalities are the most important qualities for maximizing one鈥檚 role as a marine biologist in a multicultural environment. According to him, scientific knowledge can always be updated, but the willingness to learn and adapt must be continuously maintained.

His contributions extend beyond the institution where he works and reach the broader public through the educational initiatives he conducts. Through various educational tourism programs, Briliandi helps foster awareness that the ocean is not merely a tourist destination, but a living system that must be protected. By introducing environmental awareness from an early age, especially to children participating in the resort鈥檚 kids club programs, he hopes future generations will develop stronger emotional connections and moral responsibility toward marine ecosystems.

For Briliandi personally, the most rewarding aspect of his work is his close connection to nature and the opportunity to build relationships with people from around the world. At this stage of his career, his role as an alumnus is measured not only by personal achievements, but also by how far he can bring the values and knowledge of aquaculture onto the global stage and make them relevant in the context of conservation and education.

Soerjantini Rahaju, M.A., Psychologist, a distinguished alumna of UNAIR鈥檚 doctoral program in Psychology, earned her Ph.D. in 2020. She currently serves as Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Surabaya (UBAYA), for the 2023 to 2027 term.

Dr. Rahaju鈥檚 leadership has been recognized by professional psychology associations at both regional and national levels. Her leadership was further solidified in May 2024 when she was inaugurated as Chair of the Indonesian Psychological Association (HIMPSI) East Java for the 2024 to 2028 term. In addition, she has been serving as Secretary of the Indonesian Psychology Professional Certification Institute (LSP) for the 2021 to 2025 period.

As a practitioner, she specializes in clinical psychology, with a focus on marital issues and increasingly complex family dynamics in the modern era. 鈥淚 concentrate my services on marital psychology and family dynamics, including providing counseling through the UBAYA Center for Psychological Consultation and Services (PKLP). As a certified professional family counselor, I am also prepared to address various contemporary household issues,鈥 she explained.

Dr. Rahaju has maintained a prolific research trajectory producing various studies between 2023 and 2024 that address contemporary issues relevant to younger generations. One of her 2024 studies examines K-pop fandom, specifically the correlation between parental, filial dynamics and celebrity worship. She has also explored the phenomenon of the quarter-life crisis in relation to young adults鈥 readiness for marriage. Her findings are expected to serve as valuable references for counselors working with Generation Z.

In addition, Dr. Rahaju actively researches family harmony, including phenomena such as commuter marriage or long-distance marriage (LDM).

鈥淭his condition is becoming increasingly common due to career demands and the high mobility of urban communities. As an academic at UBAYA, I have contributed to developing an Indonesian-based instrument to measure family quality of life. The availability of a culturally relevant tool is crucial for producing diagnoses that align with Eastern societal values,鈥 she said.

Dr. Rahaju鈥檚 active contributions reflect progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-being through her work in clinical psychology and family mental health, as well as Goal 4 on Quality Education through her commitment to advancing academic scholarship in psychology. UNAIR NEWS 鈥 East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa as the General Chairperson of the 东京热 Alumni Association (IKA UNAIR), officially inaugurated the Central Java Regional Board on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the UTC Convention Hotel. The ceremony served as a vital forum for fortifying alumni synergy in support of national development, with a strategic focus on the healthcare sector.

A significant majority of the newly inducted officers are medical professionals, primarily physicians. The prominent presence of healthcare experts within the IKA UNAIR Central Java leadership underscores the substantial role alumni play in reinforcing medical services across the Indonesian archipelago. Beyond serving as a platform for professional networking, the association is expected to generate pragmatic solutions to complex national challenges.

In her keynote address, Governor Parawansa urged alumni to assume leadership roles in addressing the uneven distribution of quality healthcare throughout Indonesia. She maintained that the nation required a collaborative framework, linking higher education institutions with their alumni networks to ensure that essential medical services are accessible to all segments of society.

She further advocated for a breakthrough in medical education by strengthening integrated approaches between clinical training and the national healthcare system. Such a model ensured that medical graduates were not only academically distinguished but also prepared to meet the immediate, practical needs of the public.

鈥淗ealthcare education in Indonesia has evolved from a hospital-based model to a university-based one. Currently, the government, via the Ministry of Health, is working to re-integrate hospital-based training without diminishing the critical role of university-based education,鈥 she stated.

Governor Parawansa also highlighted the persistent shortage of medical specialists, particularly in the “4T” regions (frontier, outermost, disadvantaged, and transmigration areas). She observed that these remote locales continued to face significant barriers in accessing specialized care.

She elucidated that the equitable distribution of specialists remained a critical indicator for improving the Human Development Index (HDI). The deployment of competent healthcare providers to underserved regions directly influenced the overall quality of life and long-term societal stability.

Furthermore, Governor Parawansa asserted that healthcare equity is a fundamental component of national resilience. She emphasized that the caliber of a nation’s human resources depends on a foundation of education, health, and social welfare. 鈥淲hen these three pillars are effectively maintained, systemic issues such as poverty and unemployment can be significantly mitigated,鈥 she concluded.

He noted that his academic background in statistics not only equipped him with technical proficiency but also fostered an analytical mindset aligned with industry needs. 鈥淢y studies in statistics have been essential in helping me interpret data and turn it into valuable insights,鈥 he said.

In his current role, Purwoko analyzes stock trading data and market indices that serve as key benchmarks for investors in evaluating corporate performance. His work helps provide a clearer picture of market conditions, providing a basis for more informed investment decisions.

He is also involved in producing research on capital market trends. Together with his team, he translates analytical findings into recommendations that can inform both strategic and policy-related decisions.

Additionally, Purwoko develops monitoring dashboards to track market performance, including that of regional representative offices. 鈥淔or me, data is a tool to better understand broader economic dynamics. We observe trends and transform them into recommendations that can be utilized by multiple stakeholders,鈥 he explained.

Working in the capital market sector demands continuous adaptability. Purwoko acknowledged that rapid changes require him to keep learning and adjusting to a dynamic work environment, with maintaining consistency under pressure being one of the main challenges.

He also underscored the importance of strengthening financial literacy among the public. Purwoko expressed hope that improvements in capital market governance will make investment more accessible and easier to understand, enabling individuals to make more informed financial decisions and better manage the effects of inflation in the future.

He encouraged younger generations to remain committed to learning and to embrace competition. 鈥淭he ability to stay resilient and the willingness to grow are key to navigating an increasingly competitive industry,鈥 he concluded.
