UNAIR NEWS – Three UNAIR students came home as winners of Education and Economics National Debate in Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka (Uhamka), Jakarta. Three of them are Akhmad Mukhlason (FIB), Iqhbal Hisyam Fikar Satria Johan (FEB), and Marta Widyawati (FIB). They bested other 16 teams held in March 18-20.

“This event was a part of Economics Education Student Association which this year held in Uhamka,” said Iqbal. Participants were from 14 universities from Java and Sumatera.

The participants of the debate competition were mostly from universities with educational program, but the theme attracted them to participate. The committee also let them participate in the competition even though they are not from Faculty of Education.

In the competition, three of them seemed to work with more efforts than the other 16 teams. The total of participating teams which were uneven made one of the winning teams in the first round faced the seventeenth team.

“From the first round scores, we were at eighth so to get to the next round we had to face the seventeenth team,” he said.

Fortunately, they made it and went through the next round. In the quarter-finals they faced  Semarang (UNNES), last year champion.

“In the final we faced Universitas Jambi. Alhamdulillah we were the champion,” said Akhmad Mukhlason. Student of Indonesian Literature 2012 hoped that in future UNAIR attention to debating competition can be improved as it can make students more critical in thinking of the nation’s problem.

“In a debate, we don’t only think how to criticize but also how to provide solution the problem,’he said.  (*)
