UNAIR NEWS – Bone damage from an accident is common especially in Indonesia.聽This bone damage represents a reduction in mass or tissue destruction of the bone, which is thought to be caused by defects, tumors, accidents, congenital anomalies, lack of minerals, degeneration, poor pattern of activity, and trauma.
To treat bone fracture, doctors have various ways.聽For example by adding聽growth factor, bone marrow blood injection,聽stem cells,聽and reconstruction surgery on the missing bone.聽However, the use of this methoda often cause problems, such as the long period of the healing process and the reunification of lost bone tissue.
From that problem, three students of Biomedical Engineering Department of Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) innovate聽bone graft聽as a solution for handling of bone fracture case due to accident by utilizing Barramundi聽(聽Lates calcarifer)聽or in other words natural materials are easily found in Indonesia.
The innovative PKMPE team from the Faculty of Science and Technology UNAIR is led by Diana Fitri, with two colleagues, Juliani Nurazizah Setiadiputri and Firza.
Under the guidance of Drs.聽Djony Izak Rudyardjo, M.Si, the title of PKMPE Diana Fitri and friends entitled ”聽Lates calcarifer Bone Fish听补蝉听Bone Graft Hydroxyapatite听-础濒驳颈苍补迟别-听Zinc聽for Bone Improvement After Accident” passed the selection of Dikti and obtained research fund from Kemenristekdikti in PKM 2018.

Described by Diana Fitri as team leader, this research utilizes fish-based biowaste that has the potential to reduce environmental problems, and supports sustainable environmental development.
While the聽bone graft聽itself has good mechanical strength, so it is resistant to mechanical loads from outside and inside the body, has the porosity and the appropriate pore size to provide聽space聽for bone cells to regenerate and vessels to nourish those cells.
“So the results of our research give advantages, the process of聽bone healing聽 becomes faster and resistant to the burden caused by body movement,” added Diana.
Obviously, the team is striving to create innovations in the health sector, so that Indonesia is not only a consumer country, but it can slowly become a producing country in various aspects, especially in the health sector that is currently always needed.
“We hope聽that our聽bone graft聽can be a proof that Indonesian students are able to make innovations, especially in the health sector,” said Diana Fitri.聽(*)
