UNAIR NEWS 鈥 The 东京热 () Patriot Expedition Team built two emergency response monitoring posts from Sunday to Saturday (September 6-12, 2026), one in front of the Udapi Hilir Village Hall and the other in the yard of the SP4 Prafi Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Manokwari. The posts aim to help residents deal with emergency conditions, as they will be equipped with emergency status boards, emergency contact numbers, communication tools such as walkie-talkies, and kentongan (traditional slit drums) as a simple early alarm system.

Team leader Dr Neffrety Nilamsari MKes explained that the posts were designed not only as monitoring stations, but also as the community’s initial coordination point during floods, earthquakes, or landslides. Beyond the physical aspect, the team also worked on non-physical development by focusing on strengthening community capacity and awareness.

“We educate residents through outreach sessions on the potential and early signs of natural disasters, evacuation routes and procedures, the importance of reporting environmental conditions, and the community’s role in maintaining and monitoring disaster-prone areas. This took the form of an earthquake simulation at State Junior High School 7 Prafi (SMPN 7 Prafi), attended by more than 200 participants,” she said.

Dr Nilamsari said the team designed a strategy from the start to ensure the posts would not stop functioning after the program ended. The key principles she and the team employed include handing over management, strengthening local capacity, and integrating the posts into the village institutional system, so that the posts’ sustainability does not depend on the presence of Team 6 of the UNAIR Patriot Expedition.

Sustainability is pursued through transferring management to the village, building the capacity of cadres, and drafting operational standard operating procedures (SOPs). These steps are supported by integration with village planning, stronger partnership networks, and post-program monitoring mechanisms.

“We monitor sustainability through several indicators: active managers, a duty roster, well-maintained facilities, regular educational activities or simulations, an activity logbook, and the cadres’ ability to activate the post during an emergency,” she added.

Through this strategy, Team 6 of the UNAIR Patriot Expedition does not stop at the program alone. It also represents a transition from a university-led program to a community-owned and village-supported disaster preparedness system. The ultimate goal is that by the time the team leaves, the community will already have the institutions, human resources, SOPs, facilities, and financing mechanisms needed for the posts to keep operating independently and sustainably.

“In the long term, we can continue to serve as a mentoring and knowledge partner, while ownership and day-to-day operations rest entirely with the community and the village government. We don’t want to merely leave behind a building, but a system that can run without us,” she emphasized.

Dr Nilamsari hoped residents would no longer feel they must wait for outside assistance when an earthquake, flood, landslide, or other emergency strikes. With the posts in place, residents have a place to gather, coordinate, obtain information, and carry out an initial response quickly and in an organized way. She also hoped more residents would gain the knowledge and courage to protect one another, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people who need special assistance.

The post at SP4 Udapi Hilir is expected to become a center for learning and a culture of community preparedness through environmental monitoring, education, simulations, and routine facility maintenance. The continued function of the post and the active involvement of cadres are key to building an independent and increasingly resilient community. “That is the greatest success and legacy we want to leave behind through this program,” she said.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 To raise public awareness about non-communicable disease, Learning with the Community (BBK) 8 东京热 (UNAIR) students in Sendangagung Village organized a free medical checkup accompanied by an education session on hypertension, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at the Sendangagung Village Hall, Sumberejo Subdistrict, Bojonegoro Regency. This event aimed to encourage the public to undergo early detection of high blood pressure while also raising awareness about the importance of maintaining good health.

Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases that is often referred to as 鈥榮ilent killer鈥 because it doesn鈥檛 show any symptoms in its early stages. However, if left uncontrolled, this condition can increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, and kidney problem. Therefore, regular blood pressure checks are an important step in detecting health conditions at an early stage.

Medical checkup and interactive education session

The event began with the free blood pressure check which was attended by residents of Sendangagung Village. Through this screening, participants were able to know about their blood pressure conditions, as an early screening. The event followed by an education session about hypertension, covering risk factors, signs and symptoms, complications, and preventive measures.

According to Puspita Ningrum, hopefully this event will raise public awareness on the importance of checking up on blood pressure regularly. 鈥淲e hope the people will not only be aware about the result of their blood pressure checkup, but also understand the importance of applying a healthy lifestyle to prevent hypertension and its complications,鈥 she said.

The education session also emphasized the importance of applying a healthy lifestyle, such as limiting salt intake, doing physical activities regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding cigarettes, and undergoing medical checkups regularly. Moreover, the public was reminded that people with hypertension must continue to take their medication as prescribed by healthcare professionals to keep their blood pressure controlled and minimize the risk of complications.

This free medical checkup and education session on hypertension are part of BBK 8 UNAIR鈥檚 promotional and initiative efforts to improve the public鈥檚 health. The public鈥檚 enthusiasm during medical checkup and education session demonstrates their strong awareness of the importance of maintaining good health from an early stage.

This event also supported the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievements, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by improving access to basic health services, early detections on non-communicable diseases, and health education which encourage the public to apply a healthy lifestyle.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 The problem of non-biodegradable disposable diapers remains a serious challenge in many rural areas. This waste, often disposed of improperly, not only pollutes the soil and water but also carries the potential to spread harmful bacteria. Driven by these concerns, UNAIR鈥檚 8th Learning with Community (BBK) Team, based in Caruban Village, initiated an innovative program titled RePot (Recycle Diapers into Pots). The event, held in the courtyard of the Caruban Village Hall on Friday (July 24, 2026), targeted local PKK (Family Welfare Movement) members as the frontline of household waste management.

Fani, the program coordinator, explained that the initiative was designed to provide a tangible solution. 鈥淐aruban Village generates a significant volume of diaper waste, much of which is still carelessly discarded. We wanted to offer a program that goes beyond education, one that includes hands-on training so mothers can turn this waste into useful products,鈥 she said. She added that these skills are expected to open up opportunities for eco-friendly home-based businesses.

Enthusiasm and program sustainability

The interactive session ran from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. local time. It began with registration and opening remarks from the head of PKK, followed by an educational session on the dangers of diaper waste and a simulation of making the cement mixture used for the pots. Participants were then divided into four groups. Fara, another program coordinator, led the hands-on pot-making session, assisted by BBK students. 鈥淲e were truly impressed by their enthusiasm. They dove straight into practicing the recycling process themselves,鈥 Fara said.

The RePot program successfully produced plant pots from diaper waste while raising participants鈥 awareness of the negative impacts of diaper waste on health and the environment. Fani noted that the program aligns with SDG 3, Good Health and Well-Being, and SDG 4, Quality Education. 鈥淪ustainability is our main focus for this program. We hope these skills can grow into a signature product for Caruban Village,鈥 she said. With 43 participants in attendance, Fara is optimistic that public awareness of waste management will continue to grow, helping recycling become a new habit in Caruban Village. Looking ahead, UNAIR鈥檚 8th BBK Team hopes the RePot innovation can continue to be developed and replicated by the community as a simple, low-cost, and sustainable solution for reducing environmental pollution caused by disposable diaper waste.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Learning with the Community (BBK) 8 东京热 (UNAIR) organized an education session on Basic Life Support (BLS) for SMK Al Hadad students at Saringembat Village, Singgahan Subdistrict, Tuban Regency on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. As one of the flagship programs resulting from a collaboration between the fields of education and health, this interdisciplinary collaboration is designed not only to enhance students鈥 knowledge, but also to build their preparedness in dealing with emergency situations. This event also aimed to improve students鈥 basic knowledge and skills in providing first aid when faced with emergencies such as fainting, cardiac arrest, and choking.

Emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere. Unfortunately, many people are still unaware of the proper first aid procedures and therefore, they often hesitate to offer help. Inspired by this condition, BBK 8 UNAIR students organized an awareness campaign that not only focused on theoretical instruction but also hands-on practical experience to better prepare participants in facing real situations.

This program was born out of the belief that life-saving skills are an essential foundation that should be introduced as early as school age. Therefore, BBK 8 UNIAR students have developed a learning method that combines instruction, hands-on practice, simulation, and interactive discussions so that the participants will not only understand the theory but are also able to apply first aid procedures correctly during an emergency.

Interactive simulation boosts participants confidence

During the activity, participants gained understanding about the first step they should take when encountering an unconscious person, starting from ensuring the safety of the location, checking patient鈥檚 response, asking for professional help, and recognizing cardiac arrest conditions that require an immediate action. Additionally, participants were taught proper first aid techniques for choking victims in accordance with standard procedures, thereby minimizing the risk of more serious consequences before medical help arrives.

Following the presentation of the material, the activity continued with a hands-on practice and simulation session of Basic Life Support. During this session, the students directly practiced first aid techniques in helping unconscious people, cardiac arrest, and choking with the guidance of BBK 8 UNAIR students. The simulations were designed to resemble situations that might be encountered in everyday life so that participants are able to understand the treatment process in a more realistic context.

The awareness campaign was interactive, featuring a Q & A session and direct simulation practice guided by BBK 8 students. The participants were actively asking questions and willing to try the Basic Life Support activity. This enthusiasm demonstrates how high the participants鈥 engagement on the presented material and also reflects the increase of awareness on the importance of first aid procedures skills.

One of the participants, Risky, admitted that this activity has given new knowledge that he hasn鈥檛 got before.

鈥淎t first, I thought the first aid procedures can only be done by healthcare workers. After attending this awareness campaign, I now understand that there are some basic procedures that can be done by the public before medical help arrives. I find this knowledge quite useful and hopefully one day I would be able to apply it when needed,鈥 he said.

Therefore, BBK 8 UNAIR students hope that through this activity, SMK Al Hadad students will not only understand the concept of Basic Life Support theoretically, but also have the courage and readiness to provide first aid procedures correctly before medical help arrives. Hopefully this skills can be the foundation that can be applied in real-life situations and contribute to build a school environment that is better prepared for emergencies.

This activity also supported Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievements, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being which focused on efforts to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all people at all ages and SDG 4: Quality Education through the provision of practical, life-skills-based learning.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 The Bengawan Solo River, which flows through Ngawi Regency, is currently facing the threat of pollution caused by the discharge of industrial waste, which is contaminating the tributaries that form a part of the Bengawan Solo River basin. The murky, foul-smelling river water, which contains hazardous substances, inspired a team from 东京热 students who took part in Community Service Program – Learning with the Community (KKN-BBK) 8, to present a nature-based solution. A program titled GESANG (Gerakan Sawah Apung) introduced the use of Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTW) or floating gardens to residents of Ngawen and Waru hamlets, Kalang Village, Pitu Subdistrict, Ngawi Regency, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTW) works by using the roots of aquatic plants which hang directly on the river鈥檚 surface to absorb pollutants such as fertilizer residues, soap waste, and hazardous heavy metals. Around these roots, millions of microbes of beneficial bacteria grow and break down pollutants naturally without the use of any chemicals. As a result, the polluted water will gradually be restored.

The plants used include water hyacinth, water spinach, water jasmine, and other plant species that have been shown to have dense root systems and high pollutant absorption capacity. Interestingly, water hyacinth that has been considered as a harmful weed, is actually the main component that is optimally utilized in the implementation of these floating gardens.

Direct practice with community

The program did not only stop at the presentation of material, function, and how Floating Treatment Wetlands works. BBK 8 UNAIR students also invited about 2 to 5 residents of Ngawen and Waru hamlets to practice building Floating Treatment Wetlands using simple and easily obtainable materials. The structures were made of 7-10 cm thick styrofoam and used plastic water bottles with holes drilled in them, which were then filled by layers of coconut fibers, pebbles, sand, and soil before being planted with water hyacinth, with the roots pointing downward to touch the water.

This direct practice approach was chosen so that the community would not only understand its function, how it works, and its concept, but they are able to implement Floating Treatment Wetlands independently in water bodies surrounding their village. Hoping that this direct practice can be carried out on a sustainable basis.

One of the residents who participated, Ilona, expressed her admiration towards the implementation of Floating Treatment Wetlands presented by BBK 8 UNAIR students. 鈥淚t鈥檚 truly wonderful that the Community Service Program students from UNAIR were able to implement and teach us about these floating water hyacinths in the tributaries of the Bengawan Solo River, especially here in Kalang Village. I hope that the implementation of these floating water hyacinths can free rivers in Kalang Village from the waste,鈥 she said.

Through this GESANG program, Community Service Program – Learning with the Community (KKN-BBK) 8 东京热 students also contribute to support the achievement in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), through the implementation of phytoremediation which directly reduces river contamination. Beside, this program also aligns with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), through the reuse of water hyacinths and reusable materials responsibly. Lastly, this program aligns with SDG 15 (Life on Land), which is reflected by the effort to maintain the balance of the aquatic ecosystem and the vegetation surrounding the river.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 The Rector of 东京热 (), Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, SE, MSi, MFin, welcomed a delegation from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation鈥檚 Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (OIC鈥揅OMSTECH) on Tuesday (December 16, 2025). The visit followed a strategic meeting between the World University Association for Community Development (WUACD) and COMSTECH held the previous day. As President of WUACD, Prof. Madyan conveyed his deep appreciation to H.E. Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary Mustafa, Coordinator General of OIC鈥揅OMSTECH, for his continued engagement and collaboration.

鈥淎llow me to extend a warm welcome to His Excellency Professor Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of the OIC COMSTECH, to 东京热. Your presence today is a great honor for us, and a strong reflection of the close and growing partnership between OIC – COMSTECH, WUACD, and 东京热.,鈥 the Rector said.

The meeting was attended by Associate Professor Dr. Humeraa Jahan, Secretary of OIC鈥揅OMSTECH; Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development and WUACD Chairperson, Prof. dr. Muhammad Miftahussurur, MKes, SpPD-KGEH, PhD; Vice Rector for the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and Business Development, Prof. Dr. Koko Srimulyo, Drs., MSi; WUACD Executive Secretary, Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, MSi; Director of Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE), Irfan Wahyudi, SSos, MComm, PhD; Secretary of the Institute for Sustainable Community Service (LPMB), Dr. Nurina Fitriani, ST; along with several faculty representatives.

Discussions centered on expanding collaboration among COMSTECH, WUACD, and 东京热, particularly in faculty and student exchanges, joint research initiatives, capacity development, community engagement, and sustainability-focused programs. During the meeting, H.E. Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary Mustafa, together with Prof. Miftahussurur and Prof. Puspaningsih, briefed the Rector on key outcomes of the strategic meeting held a day earlier. Student mobility emerged as one of the main proposals.

鈥淚鈥檇 suggest that ten students from 东京热 visit Pakistan, including five who are active bloggers. All expenses will be fully covered. write about universities in Pakistan and participate in workshops there. They will represent 东京热 and introduce UNAIR through videos and presentations to Pakistani students. This initiative will be the first of its kind,鈥 Prof. Mustafa said.

Focused on SDG 6 and 17

In a separate interview with LPMB UNAIR Secretary Dr. Nurina Fitriani, ST, H.E. Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary Mustafa underscored the urgency of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), warning that many countries are unlikely to meet their targets by 2030. 鈥淭here are two important things. First, achieving the SDGs depends heavily on science and technology, whether in clean energy, healthcare, universal education, or food security. Every country has to understand that in orderto achieve SDGs, they need to deploy science and technology,鈥 Prof. Mustafa said.

鈥淪econd, there are many areas in which countries can work together. So international collaboration is important. Some countries have made significant progress toward the SDGs, while many others have not. As humans living in this planet, it is important for us to develop together. Without collaboration, progress will be impossible. International cooperation is critical for global peace, security, and for achieveing the SDGs,鈥 he added.

Prof. Mustafa also highlighted ongoing efforts by OIC鈥揅OMSTECH in partnership with WUACD and 东京热, noting that these collaborations are expected to produce concrete programs aligned with the SDGs. Planned initiatives are in disaster management, education, herbal medicine, and issues related to water scarcity.

鈥淓verything depends on water, and water is a very interdisciplinary field. It is not only related to science, engineering, and technology, but also to social behavior and psychology, how communities perceive water as a resource and avoid wasting it, how we consume water responsibly, and how we recycle and manage it. We have discussed the possibility of building a team of experts from various disciplines to support the management of this vital resource,鈥 explained the COMSTECH leader.

Concluding the interview, Prof. Mustafa praised the openness and commitment demonstrated by UNAIR鈥檚 leadership in supporting member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. 鈥淚 consider 东京热 as a focused center for development many OIC countries. We have discussed the possibility of student exchanges, joint research, joint workshops and training programs, and joint projects, and honorable rector of this university was completely in agreement in all of these,鈥 he said.

OIC鈥揅OMSTECH and WUACD share a common vision to advance inclusive and impactful higher education. This collaboration actively reflects both institutions鈥 commitment to capacity building and sustainable development through higher education. The partnership with OIC鈥揅OMSTECH also underscores the strong commitment of 东京热 and WUACD to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
