UNAIR NEWS – Who wouldn’t want to study abroad on a scholarship? Every student surely dreams of it, including Noni Trisha Hapsari. Thanks to the IISMA Kemdikbudristek scholarship, the Management student from Airlangga (UNAIR) realized her dream of studying at the University of Sussex in England.听

Noni enrolled in the School of Media and Arts and Humanities program, with various elective courses such as Psychology, Anthropology, Journalism, and Digital Media.

Noni shared her IISMA experience and the excitement she felt both academically and non-academically. The University of Sussex conducts two types of sessions: lectures and seminars. In a lecture, professors typically present material for 1-2 hours, and all students taking a specific course attend the same lecture. Seminars, on the other hand, last for about an hour with a limited number of students, around 10-15 individuals.听

According to Noni, seminars are more engaging as they are led by tutors and delve deeper into the topics covered in the lectures. She finds seminars more enjoyable than lectures because students can express their opinions. It is a platform for discussions with fellow students and tutors.听

Noni highlighted that the University of Sussex offers equally impressive academic and non-academic programs. Extracurricular activities on campus come in the form of societies and sports clubs. Societies cover a wide range of interests, from Taylor Swift enthusiasts, Album Listening Society, and Craft Society to religious communities and nationality-based communities.听

Noni particularly enjoyed participating in the Film Society, where they watch films and engage in discussions or casual conversations about them. She emphasized that societies are great opportunities to meet and make new friends.听

In addition to these, there is a program called Buddy Scheme, a support system for students who face difficulty adapting and seeking companionship during their studies. Any student can register for the Buddy Scheme and will be matched with a volunteer student who suits their preferences.

Noni explained that many participants are exchange students or freshmen, and the program includes bonding activities such as visits to the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, decorating Christmas cards, and ice skating in the city.听

In the end, the Surabaya-native student acknowledged that IISMA provided her with valuable lessons. Through IISMA, she gained confidence and learned not to fear expressing opinions in class because the professors and tutors highly appreciate student input.

“There are no incorrect responses. If a student’s answer is not quite right, the professor will correct it without passing judgment,” said Noni.听

Noni learned the importance of making friends with anyone. During her time in Sussex, she made friends with both postgraduate students and first-year students.

“Although there is an age difference, it is not quite noticeable. We can still be friends, just like peers,” she concluded. (*)听

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 consistently sends its best students to join the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) programs, including the International Student Mobility Award (IISMA). A total of 57 students have been sent to various parts of the world to participate in the program. Wibawanto Wahyu Widodo from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences becomes one of the awardees who has been sent to the University of Warsaw, Poland, from September to January.

Wiby, for short, chose the University of Warsaw for its courses that fit his interests. He gained a lot of insight and new perspectives from another side of the world.

鈥泪 gained valuable knowledge, especially because I was able to learn from different perspectives,鈥 he said.

All the courses he took followed a similar 90-minute learning system. What set them apart was the variation in content and course load.

鈥淭he courses I took are all 90-minute-long lectures. The professors rarely assign homework; they conduct exams at the end of each semester,鈥 Wiby said.

鈥淎part from the academic activities, I took part in the IISMA challenge. We celebrate Batik Day and Indonesian Day, where we promote Indonesian culture to the international audience,鈥 he said.

During his free time, he visited the historical Ksi膮偶 Castle. 鈥淭he castle has a dark history. Beneath the castle lies a tunnel complex built by war prisoners during the Nazi German era,鈥 he said.

Unlike most students who experience culture shock due to language and weather differences, Wiby used these moments to interact with the international community. 鈥泪 have become accustomed to interacting with people around the world, which enhances my communication skills, thanks to IISMA,鈥 he said.

The program allows Wiby to improve his insight, especially in completing his final research. 鈥淎fter returning to Indonesia, I hope to share all of my experiences here with others. I also hope to help others who want to join the program accomplish their aspirations,鈥 he said.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Tazkia Ibnatiar Rahma, a Management student from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) 东京热, was selected as a Talent Development Intern at Blibli through the Kemdikbudristek鈥檚 MSIB program.

Several other partner companies turned her down before being approved by Blibli. However, her perseverance and optimism helped her to secure a position at one of Indonesia鈥檚 leading e-commerce platforms. Therefore, she is grateful to have gained such a valuable opportunity.

鈥淭he recruitment team from Blibli reached out to me for a user interview during the last minutes of the MSIB closing. Alhamdulillah, I got the offer at the Talent Development of BlibliCare,鈥 she said.

Interns can work in the office or remotely, depending on agreements with their mentors. She is also involved in several projects, including the development of the BlibliCare module, talent mapping, and development need analysis.

鈥淭he mentors are kind and supportive. They give us chances to collaborate on the projects. If I made a mistake, the trainer from Talent Development gives me feedback. It improves my skills,鈥 said the Surabaya-origin student.

Tazkia has a lot of wonderful experiences in Talent Development. She learned to be more socially aware and responsive when facing challenges.

She also learned how the training team provided training to agents, from self-development and enhancing service system standards to fostering customer loyalty.

鈥泪 think my leadership skills have improved a lot. I encourage my team to make innovations. Surprisingly, there is no seniority culture here; people are just addressed by their first names. Everyone is welcome to contribute, no discrimination,鈥 she said.

In the end, the FEB鈥檚 Most Outstanding student spilled some tips and tricks for the MSIB selection. Students should use every opportunity. Tazkia even recommends using probability theory, where 11 of the 22 positions are likely to go to the next round. Make sure that the position you applied for is clearly stated in your resume to make it easily identifiable by the ATS (Applicant Tracking System).

鈥淏esides, prepare yourself for the upcoming tests, such as Psychometric evaluation, English proficiency assessments, and interviews. We must comprehend the position we鈥檙e looking for as well as the company鈥檚 profile. Demonstrate the innovations you can bring to the company and highlight your relevant experiences to help it grow,鈥 she said.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Moch Zidane Indrawan, student of Japanese Studies (Stujep), Humanities (FIB), (UNAIR), had the learning opportunity听in the Land of Cherry Blossoms. Zidane, for short, is currently undergoing an internship at the Yumoto Shirogane Onsen Hotel, Japan, from October 2023 until next October.听

The internship program of PT. Japan Indonesia Academic Program (JIPA) aims to improve student鈥檚 Japanese language skills and provides real work experience. Besides, students will also experience the working culture and social life of Japanese people.

In an interview on Jan 8, 2024, Zidane stated that he has learned about manners in serving Japanese food setups during the program. He also welcomed and directed guests according to their table and room numbers.听

Before being in charge, Zidane attended an orientation to his work. He also received direct training to strengthen his skills during his internship.听

Learning and adapting to a foreign language in a foreign country is not easy; in this case, Zidane often experiences culture shock due to the huge differences in lifestyle and weather. Living as a Muslim minority has become an obstacle for Zidane to adjust.听

鈥泪 faced a lot of obstacles. One of them is recognizing the time for the fardh prayers (Fajr, Midday, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha‘).听I must be really careful when it comes to buying food because pork and beef are quite similar, and there are no halal labels to differentiate,” he said.听

Furthermore, Zidane revealed that the way Japanese people speak is more difficult than he imagined. “Sometimes I communicate a lot when I get orders, serve customers who speak very fast Japanese, and sometimes I don’t know what they’re talking about,” he said.

“At first, I was not very confident, and it was difficult to understand what the customers were saying because Japanese people speak very quickly. However, because I have been interning for several months, I can understand and get used to the tone of Japanese people here,” the FIB UNAIR student added.

Zidane has had many obstacles since his arrival. However, he didn’t just give up and was determined to finish this program well.

鈥泪 try to be determined with myself, carry on as usual, and pray as usual. If there are problems, I tell my family or close friends to find a way out,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Zidane believes that this program allows him to gain work experience before graduating and prepare for a future career.

He also advised all students to not be afraid to try. 鈥淒on’t hesitate to explore things you’ve never encountered before. To those studying Japanese and aspiring to visit Japan, maintain your passion for learning the language. This will help you become proficient and bring you closer to visiting your dream destination,” he explained.

For Selly, being one of the thousands of selected students is such a pleasure. The dream of studying in Europe has finally come true. She had failed in the previous IISMA 2022. Hence, this opportunity is a blessing that she is grateful for. 鈥泪鈥檓 beyond happy and grateful, one of my biggest dreams has been fulfilled. I鈥檝e had my failure [in IISMA] before,鈥 she told UNAIR NEWS on Wednesday, November 15, 2023.

The student narrated her new experiences to UNAIR NEWS. In terms of academic culture, she noted a distinct difference between the Czech Republic and Indonesia. 鈥淭he academic culture in Czechia is more relaxed compared to Indonesia鈥檚. Most lecturers use the peer teaching method, hence there鈥檚 no significant boundary between lecturers and students. Besides, there鈥檚 a high level of openness for discussions,鈥 she said.

Selly had also met Kakek Yono, the man behind the 鈥淪urat dari Praha鈥 movie. The rendezvous left her impressed, as she got to learn about history and life values from him.

鈥泪 also had the chance to meet Kakek Yono, an Indonesian exile in Prague, when I visited the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia. It was a delight to share thoughts with him,鈥 said the Most Outstanding Student of the Faculty of Humanities in 2021.

As an IISMA awardee, Selly feels that she has a big responsibility for studying and introducing Indonesian culture.

She promoted the Indonesian culture through Djoempa Pemoeda, a collaborative event conducted by IISMA awardees, the Indonesian Student Association (PPI), and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia. The event was held to commemorate the National Heroes Day.

Djoempa Pemoeda promotes Indonesian culture by performing traditional dance and serving traditional food. The event successfully drew foreigners鈥 attention. They were very eager to learn Indonesian culture.

鈥淲e performed traditional dances and treated the visitors to traditional Indonesian cuisine. They enjoyed the Indonesian culinary delights we served, ranging from shredded beef, fried rice, fried bananas, to rendang,鈥 she said.

The effort to promote Indonesian culture persists. With her colleagues, Selly hoped to continue organizing promotional activities to promote Indonesian culture to the world.

鈥淎s an IISMA awardee, I have to introduce Indonesian culture abroad. I truly hope to use the opportunity to promote Indonesia globally through this program,鈥 she said.
