UNAIR NEWS 鈥 东京热 () continues expanding international academic networking through a company visit to Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland, on Thursday, September 10, 2026. This visit became a platform to explore strengthening research collaborations, academic publications, doctoral education, and research partnerships which give positive impact to industry and community.

UNAIR delegations led by the Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development (RICD), Prof Dr Muhammad Miftahussurur, dr MKes SpPD-KGEH PhD. On the other hand, Edinburgh Napier University was represented by Dr Gail Norns, the Associate Dean International and Associate Professor Midwifery at the School of Health & Social Care, along with Dr Pauline A. Gordon, the Deputy Head of International (Partnerships) The Business School, and several representations from the research center.

Prof Miftahussurur explained that UNAIR and Edinburgh Napier had previously been connected through several global research networks, especially in the health sector. In the future, this collaboration is directed to evolve into joint research designed from the ground up by both institutions, featuring more targeted agendas, funding, and outputs.

He introduced UNAIR鈥檚 research ecosystems, including research centers and research excellence in the health sector that already possess international networks on clinical research and community. He also emphasized UNAIR鈥檚 interest in expanding collaborations into business, public policy, and community development sectors in line with the mandate of the RICD sector.

The host presented several research centers at The Business School Edinburgh Napier which work directly with the industry, government, and community. These include Centre for Business Innovations and Sustainable Solutions which focuses on supervising business and community in generating innovative and sustainable solutions; Tourism Research Centre which highlights sustainable tourism; Centre for Child & Family Law & Policy which contributes in law development and family policy; and Centre for Military Research, Education & Public Engagement.

鈥淭hese research centers are multidisciplinary and open for research collaborations and international partners,鈥 he said.

Prof Miftahussurur assessed that this model of research center connected to the industry is in line with UNAIR鈥檚 direction in strengthening research downstreaming and community development. This opens up applied research opportunities especially in the issue of sustainability, creative economy and tourism, as well as social policy.

鈥淚n the health sector, Edinburgh Napier has a research focus on mental health, wellbeing, and midwifery, including the ongoing midwifery project with partners in Vietnam that is considered to have potential for expansion to the context of Indonesia,鈥 he explained.

The discussion also narrowed down to the doctoral programs scheme as a pathway to strengthen joint research. Edinburgh Napier presented the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program, which was designed in a modular and flexible format with online components, enabling students from Indonesia to pursue it without having to stay full-time in Edinburgh. The split-site PhD scheme, where students divide their time between their home university and Edinburgh Napier under joint supervision from both institutions, was also discussed.

Prof Miftahussurur explained that UNAIR has undergone joint supervisions with universities in Australia, Japan, and Taiwan, with flexible timelines and arrangements determined jointly between students and their supervisors. He proposed the similar scheme, including sandwich program and double degree, to be developed jointly with Edinburgh Napier through Postgraduate School (SPs) and Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNAIR.

As a follow up, both institutions agreed to conduct an online technical meeting involving Postgraduate School (SPs) and related units at UNAIR. This meeting will discuss the development of doctoral education partnership, joint research, and collaborations with several research centers of Edinburgh Napier.

In this visit, Prof Miftahussurur was also accompanied by the Head of Institute for Innovation, Journal Development, Publishing, and Intellectual Property Rights (LPJPHKI), Prof Ferry Efendi SKep Ns MSc PhD, who is also a lecturer from Faculty of Nursing (FKp) UNAIR. Prof Efendi highlighted opportunities for joint research concerning the migration of Indonesian nurses overseas through government-to-government schemes, including the collaboration development in the midwifery sector.

鈥淭he visit to Edinburgh Napier University was a part of a series of official visits by the UNAIR delegations to the United Kingdom on September 7-13, 2026, which also included a meeting with King鈥檚 college London and participation in the EAIE Glasgow 2026,鈥 Prof Efendi said.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 东京热 () is once again providing a platform for students from various ASEAN countries through the ASEAN University Network-Student Affairs Network (AUN-SAN) 2026. The event will take place from Wednesday (September 2, 2026) to Saturday (September 5, 2026) at 东京热 as the host university.

The forum will take place simultaneously with the VOX (Voice, Opportunity, and eXchange) Meeting. Approximately 50 delegates from 10 countries and 30 universities across the ASEAN region are expected to gather at the forum. Both events share the theme “Future Skills and Global Minds,” which emphasizes the importance of skills and a global mindset in addressing future challenges.

Vice Rector for Academic, Student, and Alumni Affairs Prof Ir Mochammad Amin Alamsjah MSi PhD explained that the forum will address several critical issues for student development, including sustainability learning initiatives, strategies to enhance student employability, and the use of digital literacy and artificial intelligence (AI).

In addition, participants will discuss student mobility for traineeships and independent study. According to Prof Alamsjah, the forum offers students the opportunity to develop their personal capacity while also opening up opportunities for collaboration in academic, research, and community development work.

“Students can learn from one another, including in building personal capacity, the education process, and the integration of AI into academic activities. They can also gain insight into the perspectives of students from other countries and adapt to a diverse environment, which will better prepare them to face future challenges,” he said.

This marks the seventh edition of AUN-SAN and the second edition of the VOX Meeting, both part of UNAIR’s broader efforts to expand its international exposure. Interactions with students and partners from across the ASEAN region are expected to boost the confidence of the academic community while opening the door to new networks.

Prof Alamsjah noted that this partnership has the potential to expand into various forms of collaboration, from student exchanges and internships to educational mentoring at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. UNAIR can also broaden its collaboration through guest lectures, visiting professors, research, and community development activities.

In his view, interacting with international partners during college can serve as valuable preparation for students as they enter the professional world. “We hope this event will empower students to be ready to become future leaders, both at the regional and international levels,” he said.

In his closing remarks, Prof Alamsjah encouraged members of UNAIR’s academic community to seize this opportunity. “Take advantage of this opportunity so that this event can have a broader impact on the advancement of knowledge and the UNAIR academic community’s network,” he said.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 A suspected hantavirus cluster aboard a cruise ship has drawn widespread attention after several passengers developed severe respiratory illnesses during an international voyage. The incident has intensified concerns over global public health risks and renewed awareness of zoonotic diseases amid growing transnational mobility.

Laura Navika Yamani, an epidemiologist from the Faculty of Public Health 东京热, explained that hantavirus infections typically do not emerge suddenly in confined settings such as cruise ships. She said the cases were more likely linked to exposure that occurred before the voyage or while individuals were in areas populated by rodent reservoirs.

鈥淭he incubation period for hantavirus can last several weeks, so symptoms may only appear after individuals have traveled to different locations,鈥 she said. She added that international maritime travel can widen the geographic detection of cases without clearly revealing where the initial infection occurred.

Transmission patterns and environmental factors

Yamani explained that hantavirus spreads through exposure to particles from the urine, feces, or saliva of infected rodents. Transmission does not require direct physical contact, as inhaling contaminated particles alone can cause infection. Because of this, activities in areas with large rodent populations carry a higher risk of exposure.

She emphasized that most hantavirus strains are not transmitted between humans. However, certain strains, including the Andes virus infection, have demonstrated limited human-to-human transmission. For that reason, she stressed that epidemiological investigations and genomic analysis remain critical to identifying the precise mode of transmission.

She also noted that environmental changes, including climate change and shifting animal habitats, are affecting the distribution of disease reservoirs. 鈥淗uman activity in new regions and the rise of ecotourism have increased the likelihood of contact with zoonotic sources that were previously confined to specific habitats,鈥 she said.

Early symptoms and mitigation efforts

From a clinical standpoint, Yamani explained that hantavirus infection often begins with nonspecific symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal problems. The illness can rapidly progress into severe pneumonia, followed by Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and shock. At that stage, patients require intensive medical care.

She added that the most severe form of the disease, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), has a relatively high fatality rate. 鈥淚n HPS cases, the mortality rate can reach 30 to 50 percent, especially when treatment is delayed,鈥 she explained.

Yamani underscored the importance of early detection and stronger public health surveillance systems, including genomic surveillance, to better understand transmission patterns. She also encouraged the implementation of the One Health approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health.

Yamani, currently serves as secretary of the Institute of Tropical Disease 东京热, further emphasized that improved sanitation, symptom monitoring, and effective risk communication are essential to preventing wider transmission. 鈥淎s global mobility continues to increase, strong healthcare preparedness and early detection systems are crucial to preventing similar outbreaks from escalating in the future,鈥 she concluded.

The addition of these new professors strengthens UNAIR鈥檚 efforts to deliver meaningful contributions both domestically and internationally, through both theoretical and practical advancements.

鈥淥ur goal is to make a global impact. Notably, two of the new professors specialize in international law, which presents an opportunity to contribute to global policy and peacebuilding鈥攕ince law is a critical instrument for achieving societal well-being,鈥 he added.

Prof. Nasih encouraged the UNAIR academic community to treat this milestone as a moment of gratitude and as motivation to push the university forward. He shared an optimistic projection that UNAIR will rise to Top 200s place in the QS World University Rankings by June 2025. 鈥淲ith the support of our 300 professors and the entire academic community, we are well-positioned to break into the world鈥檚 top 200 universities,鈥 he stated.

He emphasized that rankings and reputation matter, as they reflect an institution鈥檚 academic quality and bolster the confidence of graduates in the global job market. 鈥淭o achieve this, the contributions of our professors are key. Their research, once published in prominent journals, will be accessible to scholars and professionals around the world,鈥 he explained.

Prof. (H.C. UNAIR) Dr. H. Sunarto, S.H., M.H., Chair of the UNAIR Board of Trustees, echoed this ambition, stating that the appointment of six new professors aligns with his broader vision for the university. 鈥淲hen Prof. Nasih began his term, UNAIR ranked in the 700s. Today we鈥檙e at 308. If we stay committed, there鈥檚 no reason we can鈥檛 reach the top 200鈥攁nd God willing, even the top 100,鈥 he said.

Reflecting on the inaugural speeches, Prof. Sunarto underscored the importance of applying knowledge beyond disciplinary boundaries and avoiding academic egotism. 鈥淎s scholars, if we fail to put our knowledge into practice, it becomes meaningless. Likewise, even with applicable knowledge, without the mental readiness to implement it, it still holds no value,鈥 he concluded.
