UNAIR NEWS 鈥 (UNAIR) has achieved another significant milestone, with 23 of its academic journals successfully attaining accreditation or reaccreditation across SINTA levels 1 to 5. This achievement, announced by the UNAIR Institute for Innovation, Journal Development, Publishing, and Intellectual Property Rights (LIPJPHKI) on Friday, October 15, 2024, underscores the university鈥檚 commitment to academic advancement.

The SINTA (Science and Technology Index) accreditation system are integral to assessing and recognizing the quality of scientific journals in Indonesia. It is conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) through the National Journal Accreditation (ARJUNA) system.

Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, Drs., M.Si., Ph.D., Head of LIPJPHKI UNAIR, attributed the accomplishment to the dedication and hard work of UNAIR鈥檚 academic community. He highlighted the implementation of a 鈥淪uper Team鈥 approach and the development of a systematic journal roadmap as the primary strategies behind this success.

“The roadmap provides clear guidance, enabling us to enhance journal quality and improve their indexing status,” Prof. Purnobasuki explained on Friday, October 22, 2024.

Each journal is assigned specific indexing goals and supported through university-level mentoring. Prof. Purnobasuki emphasized that a well-defined roadmap is essential to achieving higher-quality indexing for the journals.

This achievement enhances UNAIR鈥檚 research output performance on both national and international scales. “With the improved quality of UNAIR-managed journals, they will increasingly become key references and destinations for researchers worldwide,” Prof. Purnobasuki stated.

The enhancement of journal quality also supports UNAIR鈥檚 Key Performance Indicator (IKU) 5, which focuses on producing impactful academic works that serve society.

“Academic output can take many forms, such as publishing national or international scientific journals, writing books like monographs or reference materials, and more,” he elaborated

Prof. Purnobasuki noted that the primary obstacle in managing journals is the limited availability of high-quality, diverse manuscripts. To address this, UNAIR has prioritized improving the quality of its journals and their indexing status to attract reputable authors.

“The quality of a journal is a key factor in attracting authors to submit their papers. Setting clear targets for each journal allows us to continuously improve their indexing status,” he said. Prof. Purnobasuki expressed confidence that well-defined goals for each journal will strengthen UNAIR鈥檚 contributions to the global academic landscape.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 (UNAIR) officially inaugurated Indonesia鈥檚 first European Union (EU) Centre on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The inauguration included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, SE, MT, Ak, and the EU Ambassador to Indonesia, HE Denis Chaibi. On the same day, the EU Centre hosted a seminar to discuss research and scholarship opportunities for the academic community.

The seminar took place at Ternate Hall in the ASEEC Tower on UNAIR鈥檚 Dharmawangsa-B campus. Speakers included Dr. KRMH Tatas Brotosudarmo and Amalia Nurul Muthmainnah, both of whom are alumni who previously received scholarships for research and study in Europe.

Since 2021, the EU has allocated more than 鈧95 billion to research and innovation programs, providing substantial opportunities for Indonesian students at the undergraduate, master鈥檚, and doctoral levels. Available programs include the Annual Research Conference (ARC) and the renowned Marie Sk艂odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).

Dr. Brotosudarmo emphasized the comprehensive training provided by the MSCA program. ” Pursuing a doctoral degree under this program doesn’t just prepare you to become an academic or researcher; it equips you holistically. Participants gain problem-solving skills applicable to industry settings as well.”

One of the program’s key advantages is its emphasis on high mobility, allowing students to conduct research at multiple universities and even directly within industries. Additionally, students gain a rich multicultural experience as the program includes participants from various countries involved in Horizon Europe.

Beyond research, the EU also offers numerous study programs with scholarships at European universities. One such program is Erasmus+. “Erasmus+ serves as the umbrella program for EU initiatives targeting youth, encompassing education, training, youth, and sports,” explained Muthmainnah, the second speaker.

The Erasmus+ scholarship comes with several unique benefits. For instance, students pursuing a master’s degree through this program are given the opportunity to study at two universities in two different countries. This is made possible through a consortium-based scheme, enabling awardees to select multiple universities across member states within the consortium where they are registered.

UNAIR NEWS 鈥 Indonesia鈥檚 Constitutional Court (MK) has recently approved a petition from labor unions, as outlined in Decision Number 168/PUU-XXI/2023. The petition addressed a range of issues critical to workers, including clarity on contract durations, restrictions on outsourcing, and the establishment of fair wage systems.

Dr. Lanny Ramli, SH, MHum, a labor law expert at (UNAIR), emphasized that safeguarding workers鈥 rights requires multifaceted consideration. According to Dr. Ramli, these considerations fall into two categories: ensuring that workers鈥 normative rights are protected and that their basic living needs are met. She added that the quality of life for workers should correspond to their performance and length of employment.

Dr. Ramli highlighted the important role of local governments in enhancing workforce quality, particularly for those seeking higher incomes. She noted that, as a unitary state, Indonesia needs active involvement from local governments to help advance community welfare.

Dr. Lanny Ramli, SH, MHum,(Photo: Faculty of Law Public Relations)
Dr. Lanny Ramli, SH, MHum,(Photo: Faculty of Law Public Relations)

鈥淭here are indeed numerous significant points in this MK decision, which requires harmonization between central and local government policies,鈥 she said. 鈥淲orkers鈥 rights must first be accommodated by local governments so that the MK ruling can be effectively implemented.鈥

Addressing the duration of Fixed-Term Employment Agreements (PKWT), Dr. Ramli explained that a five-year limit is reasonable. After a PKWT contract expires, workers should be eligible to enter new employment agreements, although these should not be considered PKWT extensions. 鈥淭he intent behind this limitation is to provide legal protection for workers,鈥 she clarified.

Dr. Ramli went on to discuss the various perspectives surrounding the term 鈥渨ages,鈥 which includes concepts like living wage, fair wage, real wage, and minimum wage. She emphasized that a proportional wage system requires clear guidelines to significantly impact the wages received by workers.

鈥淚t鈥檚 challenging to determine proportional wages without clear parameters and regulations,鈥 she noted. 鈥淕enerally, proportional wages consider regional conditions or what is now known as the Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP), with adjustments based on a worker鈥檚 performance and tenure.鈥

Dr. Ramli expressed her hope that any new regulations would address workers’ needs while considering employers’ capacities and simplifying bureaucratic processes. 鈥淲orkers and employers are partners, with the government as the overseer, so labor laws must be clearly defined,鈥 she concluded.
