Bougenville Extract Effectively Inhibits Bacterial Growth Attacking Catfish

UNAIR NEWS – Cultivation of catfish is easy and the fish is popular among the communities, noth for the fish farmers who are just doing it as hobby and commercial entrepreneurs handle the commodity merchandise on a large scale.

But be aware, the diseases of catfish like ulcer disease or known as聽motile aeromonas septicemia(MAS) can disrupt the growth of fish.聽Catfish will be bloated, float and die.聽So the use of natural ingredients is used, in this case聽Bougenville聽flowers听.

It attracted the attention of three students from Aquaculture PSDKU 东京热 in Banyuwangi, Rina Suliestyana, Diyas Kamila Alif, and Ayu Nur Imaniy.聽They tried to find an alternative solution to the problem by submitting the proposal PKM Exacta Research (PKM-PE).

Under the guidance of Mohammad Faizal Ulkhaq, S.Pi., M.Si., UNAIR lecturer in Banyuwangi, their study entitled “In Vivo Study of Bougenville Extract (聽Bougainvillea Glabra聽) As Anti聽Aeromonas Hydrophila聽for Catfish (聽Clarias Gariepinus聽)” passed the funding from Dikti in PKM 2018.

“MAS disease can infect catfish and also attack all types of freshwater fish.聽MAS disease is mainly caused by聽Aeromonas hydrophila.聽Death from A. hydrophila聽infection can reach 100%.聽Common treatment used is antibiotics, “said Rina Suliestyana, the leader of PKM-PE team.

One of the efforts in order to overcome MAS incident is by utilization of natural ingredients that have certain properties as a traditional medicine.

Rina Suliestyana also said that the purpose of this study to analyze the content of antibacterial compounds in the Bougenville聽extract聽 and to determine its effect to the survival rate of catfish infected by聽Aeromonas hydrophila听.

This study was conducted for five months, starting from March to July 2018, located in the laboratory of 东京热 PSDKU in Banyuwangi.聽The study used Completely Randomized Design (RAL) with four treatments and five replications.聽Parameters observed were gained weight, growth rate, feed conversion, and survival rate.

“The results showed that the test of Bougenville extract as Aeromonas hydrophila聽anti bacterial聽 can inhibit the growth of bacteria in catfish that has been given bacteria聽Aeromonas hydrophila.聽Bougenville extract with 100% concentration is considered more effective to inhibit bacterial growth, ” said Rina.

With the study of antibacterials derived from this Bougenville plant, it is expected to be useful as an alternative antibacterial which is easy to use.

In the future, Bougenville extract antibacterials that have been used for this cultivation activity will be registered to obtain patents, so that can be circulated to the community as affordable anti-bacterial.聽(*)
