UNAIR NEWS –��Having excellent academic facility is a plus for any universities including for Faculty of Medicine (FK) ������. The oldest faculty in ������ Airlangga Surgical Anatomy Development Center or ASAD-C. It is managed by Department of Histologic Anatomy.

This laboratory is equipped with sophisticated and modern facilities. There is three dimensional (3D) operation video system, a pendant, and a fresh cadaver refrigerator. The initiator of ASAD-C establishment, Asra Al Fauzi, dr. Sp. BS, stated that facilities in ASAD-C are deemed as sophisticated. He said that he has seen similar laboratory in some foreign countries and then he compared them with ASAD-C.

”We should be proud of this. In Indonesia, this kind of laboratory exists only in UNAIR. I dare to say that this is the best in Asia or at least in South East Asia. There is one in Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, but it isn’t as good as ours. They don’t have 3D video. In Japan, there is no 3D system as well. I saw one in America too,” he said.

The appreciation of ASAD-C was coming from participants of “The 11th Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons (ACNS) 2016 in FK.

“This is better. I will move and use this facility if we have cadaver workshop,” said Asra imitating the participants’ words.

This cadaver laboratory is suitable for human anatomy workshops and trainings. It starts to get the attention. Some famous universities in Indonesia have collaborated with FK UNAIR to use the anatomy laboratory. Some requests were even from abroad.

As planned, this ASAD-C is not only for workshops but also used for FK students anatomy classes. By using 3D video, students will understand human anatomy easily.

“The images are seen more realistic, such as behind the lungs there is heart. Behind eyes, there are nerves and they look so real. It is very different from power point explanation,” he said.

Eventhough ASAD-C has not been released officially, this facility has functioned effectively. For the last few years, there were international workshops held here such as “11^th��Asian Congress Neurosurgical Surgeons” and “21^th��Perhimpunan Spesialis Bedah Saraf Indonesia Conferences” where participants from 44 countries have taken parts. The experts were from Japan, Germany, Korea, Hongkong, Turkey, Indonesia until Africa.

In the near future, ASAD-C will be used for workshops in plastic surgery and orthopedics. The committees were not always from FK UNAIR. They were also from Jakarta. Asra said that his unit is optimistic that ASAD-C will get more attention from the global academic community.

“It is an achievement as well as international branding for ������ globally. Branding can be done in various ways. It can be done through international publications, lecturers’ capacity improvement, can also through establishment of venue like ASAD-C. It can also be used as Surabaya’s branding,” he said. (*)
